After Kentucky's first possession stalled, Tennessee marched from its 24-yard line to the UK 7, where three incompletions preceded a 24-yard James Wilhoit field goal for a 3-0 UT lead. Kentucky advanced to the Vol 35-yard line on its ensuing possession but surrendered the ball on downs. Tennessee went 65 yards in six plays to take a 10-0 lead, the touchdown coming on a 15-yard pass from Erik Ainge to Robert Meachem.
KEY PLAY

On fourth-and-three at the UT 35, Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson fired a pass that Keenan Burton dropped at the Vol goal line. A catch there would've given the Wildcats a 7-3 lead and tons of momentum. Instead, UT scored six plays later to go up 10-0.

KEY PLAYER

Meachem. Two plays before his 15-yard TD catch he had a 30-yard reception that carried from the UK 43 to the 13.

KEY STAT

Kentucky rushed the ball seven times for a mere 18 net yards.

Kentucky drove from its 9-yard line to the Vol 3 but Ellix Wilson stopped Rafael Little for no gain on third and goal, forcing UK to settle for a 21-yard Lones Seiber field goal that narrowed the gap to 10-3. Tennessee drove to the Kentucky 19-yard line but Wilhoit's 36-yard field goal try was deflected by Curtis Pulley, UK's backup quarterback. Little had a 43-yard burst and a five-yard TD catch as the Cats drove 80 yards in five plays. UK missed the PAT, however, leaving the score at 10-9. When Lucas Taylor fumbled the ensuing kickoff, UK recovered at the Vol 19-yard line and drove to the 1. Ryan Karl threw Little for a two-yard loss on third and goal, however, and UK settled for a 20-yard field goal 18 seconds shy of halftime and a 12-10 intermission lead.
KEY PLAY

If Karl hadn't stopped Little on the goal line, Kentucky probably would've scored a TD just before halftime and led 16-10, instead of 12-10.

KEY PLAYER

Woodson. Kentucky's talented quarterback completed 8 of 9 passes in the quarter for 72 yards and a touchdown.

KEY STAT

Kentucky dominated the quarter, piling up 73 rushing yards, 72 passing yards and 145 total yards. The Cats also converted on three of five third-down tries.

Although there was no scoring in the period, there was plenty of action. Tennessee drove to the UK 37 but Ainge was sacked on third-and-six, forcing a punt. A 29-yard screen to tight end Jacob Tamme helped UK advance to the Vol 14-yard line but a bobbled snap caused Seiber to miss a 33-yard field goal try. A 33-yard hookup between Ainge and Meachem helped Tennessee advance to UK's 6-yard line by quarter's end.
KEY PLAY

On third and five at the UT 40-yard line, Meachem gathered in a quick hitch, broke a tackle and rambled 33 yards to the UK 27-yard line.

KEY PLAYER

Ainge. The Vol QB completed 7 of 8 passes for 89 yards in the quarter and had the Vols on the verge of the go-ahead touchdown.

KEY STAT

Tennessee kept the ball for 10 minutes and 40 seconds to UK's four minutes and 20 seconds, yet the period was scoreless.

On third and goal at the UK nine-yard line, Ainge hit Meachem with an eight-yard pass over the middle. LaMarcus Coker scored on fourth-and-goal from the 2-foot line to give UT a 17-12 lead. A 41-yard pass from Woodson to Dicky Lyons helped UK advance to the Vol 28-yard line but Turk McBride stopped Little for a one-yard loss on fourth and two, giving UT the ball on downs. Ainge fumbled near midfield on the ensuing possession but teammate Eric Young recovered. Kentucky moved from its 13-yard line to the Vol 6 in the final minutes but Woodson's fourth-and-goal pass to Lyons fell incomplete with 3:04 remaining. Tennessee then ran out the clock to preserve the victory.
KEY PLAY

With 2:28 to go and UT facing a third-and-three at its own 13-yard line Meachem drifted into the right flat, caught a pass from Ainge, broke a tackle and ran 15 yards to pick up a first down that enabled the Vols to kill the clock and seal the victory.

KEY PLAYER

TIE - Jacob Tamme (UK) and Rico McCoy (UT). Kentucky's talented tight end had catches of 10, 12 and 38 yards on the Wildcats' final drive. McCoy tipped a pass intended for Lyons one play before UK's fourth-down pass fell incomplete.

KEY STAT

Kentucky gained 137 yards in the final quarter but could not score.
