A 27-yard pass from Anthony Morelli to Deon Butler on the first play of the game went for naught when Penn State's Kevin Kelly missed a 45-yard field goal. After an exchange of punts, Tennessee's James Wilhoit nailed a 44-yard field goal to give the Vols a 3-0 lead with just under five minutes left in the period.
KEY PLAY

On first and 10 at the Vol 41-yard line, Erik Ainge threw a short pass to Jayson Swain, who rambled 20 yards to complete a 24-yard play that moved the ball to Penn State's 35-yard line. Wilhoit booted his tie-breaking field goal four plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Swain. The senior receiver had back-to-back catches of 15 and 24 yards on UT's scoring drive.

On PSU's next possession Kelly hit tight end Andrew Quarless with a three-yard touchdown pass for a 10-3 lead. Tennessee retaliated on its ensuing possession, going 80 yards in six plays. LaMarcus Coker got the TD on his first carry of the game, racing 42 yards to tie the score at 10-all.

Although the quarter was scoreless, there were some significant developments. A 40-yard completion to Jayson Swain was averted when a huge hit by PSU safety Anthony Scirrotto knocked the ball loose. An offensive interference penalty against Robert Meachem killed UT's first possession of the quarter. A completion to Josh Briscoe near the Penn State 35-yard line was reversed upon review. Ainge was intercepted on the very next play. An apparent 16-yard completion to PSU's Derrick Williams was overturned on review, preventing a first-and-10 at the Vol 32-yard line and forcing a punt.
KEY PLAY

On first-and-10 near midfield, Meachem dropped a pass at the PSU 3-yard line and was called for offensive interference on the same play. Instead of six points, the Vols got a drive-killing 15-yard penalty.

KEY PLAYER

Scirrotto. He made the big hit that cost Swain a reception near UT's 25-yard line and also made the interception of Ainge that thwarted another UT drive.

KEY STAT

Tennessee outgained Penn State 142 yards to 52 in the period but was unable to score.

Kelly missed a 53-yard field goal on Penn State's first possession of the quarter. One play after Ainge hit Chris Brown with a 53-yard pass to the PSU 14-yard line, Arian Foster fumbled. PSU's Tony Davis scooped up the loose ball and raced 88 yards to give the Nittany Lions a 17-10 lead. Tony Hunt, PSU's 230-pound tailback, carried seven times in a row on a nine-play drive that ended with a 23-yard Kellly field goal and a 20-10 lead with 3:29 left.
KEY PLAY

Foster's fumble. It was a 14-point swing. Instead of Tennessee going up 17-10, Penn State went up 17-10.

KEY PLAYER

PSU linebacker Sean Lee. He stripped the ball from Foster on Davis' 88-yard fumble return. Lee also sacked Ainge for a five-yard loss on UT's last possession.

KEY STAT

Joe Paterno is now 3-0 in bowl games against Tennessee.
