Antwan Stewart joins the mix

Now that he has gotten the OK from the NCAA Clearinghouse, freshman defensive back Antwan Stewart is on the fast track to playing time for the Tennessee Vols.

Stewart, a 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback prospect from Dumfries, Va., missed all of UT's preseason workouts but is participating in practice this week. He'll get a crash course in secondary play because defensive coordinator John Chavis wants to see if he can contribute.

''We'll keep working him and keep working him,'' Chavis said. ''He's moving around well and doing some good things. We're really excited about him. Obviously, he's got a lot of catching up to do. We're going to make that a project ... to get him caught up. Obviously, we'll do more next week than we are this week.''

Odds are, Stewart will be playing this fall, rather than redshirting.

''I think there's a good chance,'' Chavis said. ''It's too early to say for sure but we'd like to get him ready to play because we need the depth.''
