Delmonico announces 2003 baseball slate

Rod Delmonico's Tennessee Vol baseball team have set up home series' matchups against Miami (Fla.), Louisville, West Virginia, Morehead State and Bowling Green State to begin their 2003 season. The Vols will also be playing the Tennessee Smokies minor league team in Sevieville for the second straight year. Delmonico announced his seasonal slate today.

"I don't know if you can find a tougher conference than the SEC," said Delmonico, who is entering his 14th season at Tennessee. "The league was No. 1 in the RPI last year and that speaks volumes in itself. We are going to have one of the younger ball clubs in the Southeastern Conference with all of our newcomers. Hopefully the early part of the season we can get some wins and get our young guys some confidence that will help them in the league play."

Tennessee plays 27 games against 10 teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season, including College World Series runner-up South Carolina. Three other opponents -- LSU, Arkansas and Miami (Fla.) -- all reached Super Regionals.

The Vols, who return three starters and 13 lettermen from last year's squad, open the season and 35-game home slate with a three game series against Morehead State, Feb. 7-9, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
