Fulmer on Eddie Robinson

Phillip Fulmer played for Doug Dickey and coached under John Majors. He was influenced by Tennessee's Gen. Bob Neyland and Nebraska's Tom Osborne. Clearly, the Vols' head man recognizes the qualities that make a quality coach.

As a result, Fulmer was greatly honored to be the inaugural recipient of the Eddie Robinson Coach of Distinction Award in 1999. And Fulmer was greatly saddened by Robinson's passing earlier today.

Robinson, who coached at Grambling from 1941 through 1997, was 88 years old.

"Eddie Robinson was a great mentor to us all," Phillip Fulmer said in a statement released by the University of Tennessee sports information office. "He was a dynamic coach with a phenomenal record, but he was much more than that as a leader of young men, a great American and an example of character and integrity.

"My greatest off-the-field honor was winning the first Eddie Robinson Coach of Distinction Award and having the opportunity to spend time with him personally at banquets and at my home."
