Ex-Vol Lyonel Stewart dies

Former University of Tennessee linebacker Lyonel Stewart, who played for the Vols from 1975-78, died Tuesday in Nashville. Stewart, a Knoxville native, was twice named All-State while playing football at Fulton High School.

He entered UT as a non-scholarship player but quickly earned a scholarship before his sophomore season.

Stewart had 111 total hits during his career from his linebacker position, posting 76 tackles and 35 assists. He was on Vol teams that played first for Bill Battle in '75 and '76 and later under Johnny Majors in '77 and '78.

Family members will receive friends from 12-1 p.m. on Monday at the McDonald Road Christian Church. Funeral services will be held at 1 after the receiving of friends. Jarnigan & Sons Funeral Home is in charge.
