Nine Vols could be selected

Say this for the folks at NFLdraftscout.com: Those people are thorough. Most websites assembled a list of the 32 players they project to be first-round picks in today's NFL Draft. Some sites listed their top 50... some their top 100.

Not NFLdraftscout.com. Showing a mind-boggling amount of ambition, these guys have assembled a list of the top 500 players eligible for this year's NFL talent lottery. Draftniks can view the list at FoxSports.com.

Interestingly enough, nine of the 500 are former University of Tennessee athletes.

Not surprisingly, junior receiver Robert Meachem is listed as the Vols' top draft prospect, checking in at No. 16. Defensive tackle Justin Harrell is No. 26 and offensive lineman Arron Sears No. 39.

Cornerback Jonathan Wade checks in at No. 47 and defensive end/tackle Turk McBride at No. 64.

There's quite a drop-off at this point, then fullback Cory Anderson shows up at No. 183. Linebacker Marvin Mitchell follows at No. 289. Offensive lineman David Ligon, projected as a center, is No. 385 and wide receiver Jayson Swain rounds out the Vol contingent at No. 407.

NFLdraftscout.com projects Meachem and Harrell as first-round NFL Draft picks, with Sears listed as a Round 1-2 pick. Wade is pegged as a second-rounder, with McBride a Round 2-3 selection. Anderson is projected to go in Round 5. Mitchell is rated a Round 7 guy who might have to settle for a free-agent contract. Ligon and Swain are listed strictly as free-agent prospects.

Wide receiver Bret Smith is not mentioned among the top 500 prospects. Nor is kicker James Wilhoit or safety Antwan Stewart.

The 2007 draft begins today at noon with Rounds 1-3. Rounds 4-7 will be held Sunday. ESPN will air today's rounds and ESPN2 will televise tomorrow's. The NFL Network will televise both rounds.
