Hefney rated No. 2 at safety

Four LSU standouts were among the first-round picks in the 2007 National Football League Draft last April, and four more Tigers could go in Round 1 when the NFL holds its 2008 talent lottery next spring.

Even after losing quarterback JaMarcus Russell (No. 1 overall), safety LaRon Landry (No. 6), wideouts Dwayne Bowe (No. 23) and Craig Davis (No. 30) in Round 1 of the recent NFL draft, the Tigers will be loaded with eye-popping talent again this fall.

Scout.com pro football expert Tom Marino recently posted his picks for the top two college seniors at each position at ScoutNFLexperts.com. Five of the guys rated No. 1 at their position are SEC players, and three of these represent LSU.

The five number 1s are wide receiver Early Doucet (LSU), guard Will Arnold (LSU), defensive end Quentin Groves (Auburn), defensive tackle Glen Dorsey (LSU) and linebacker Jasper Brinkley (South Carolina).

Two more SEC players are rated No. 2 at their positions, and one of those is LSU cornerback Chevis Jackson. The other is Tennessee safety Jon Hefney.

Still not convinced the Tigers have enough bit-time talent to make a serious run at the national title? Then consider this: Marino's pick as the NCAA's top offensive senior is LSU's Doucet. Marino's pick as the NCAA's top defensive senior is LSU's Dorsey.

The Tigers clearly have elite-level talent, so the heat is on head coach Les Miles to produce an elite-level team.
