USA defeats Brazil for gold medal

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Two Lady Vols combined for 16 rebounds to help lead the United States over Brazil, 79-66, and capture the gold medal at the Pan Am games.

Nicky Anosike had 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals in Tuesday's win. Alexis Hornbuckle had five points, nine boards and two steals.

Both are rising seniors for Tennessee and both have now added a gold medal in international play to the 2007 NCAA national title they won in April.

The United States was led by Matee Ajavon, who scored 27 points. The second-leading scorer was Angel McCoughtry with 17 points.

The United States faced its biggest challenge of the tournament in host country Brazil, with both teams entering the contest 4-0.

Not only was the United States the youngest team in the competition, nearly seven years younger than Brazil's squad on average, but the United States had to overcome a partisan home crowd.

The United States finished the competition 5-0 and handed Brazil its only loss of the tournament.
