Colquitt leads kickoff derby

Based on Saturday's first full-scale scrimmage of the preseason, Britton Colquitt will be handling Tennessee's kickoff duties this fall, as well as the Vols' punting chores.

Kicking off from the 30-yard line, in accordance with the new NCAA rule, freshmen Daniel Lincoln and Chad Cunningham struggled to get the ball inside the 10-yard line. Colquitt, who averaged 44.9 yards as the Vols' No. 1 punter as a sophomore last fall, routinely boomed his kickoffs to the goal line. Colquitt also got more hang time on his kickoffs than Lincoln and Cunningham. Barring injury, he appears a lock to be the kickoff man when the season opens Sept. 1 at California.

Whether Colquitt also handles the placement duties is not so clearcut. He and Lincoln seemed pretty even during the scrimmage. Lincoln hit 4 of 7 attempts, with a long of 51 yards, while Colquitt was 4 of 6 with a long of 51.

Lincoln hit a 42-yarder, then Colquitt missed a 43-yarder. Lincoln missed from 44 yards and Colquitt hit from the same spot. Lincoln then got a second try and connected. Later in the workout both men hit from 41 yards, then missed from the same distance. Lincoln missed another 41-yarder, then Colquitt connected.

Near the end of the workout Colquitt attempted a 56-yarder that was long enough but wide left. It didn't matter, however, because a penalty nullified the play. He and Lincoln then nailed a 51-yarder each to conclude the kicking phase of the scrimmage.
