Due to the new kickoff rule, Phil Fulmer (who historically defers) took the ball after UT won the coin toss. After advancing to the California 48-yard line, however, Erik Ainge was hit by Zack Follett as he attempted a pass. The ball squirted backward (making it a lateral) and was scooped up on a bounce by Cal linebacker Worrell Williams, who returned the ball 44 yards for a touchdown. Tennessee bounced back with a 70-yard TD drive, capped by a 12-yard pass to Arian Foster. Cal roared back with an eight-play, 52-yard drive, Nate Longshore getting the TD on a one-yard sneak. Tennessee against bounced back, however. Foster returned the ensuing kickoff 66 yards and Montario Hardesty got the tying TD five plays later on a one-yard dive.
KEY PLAY

Shell-shocked after Cal's lateral return, Tennessee needed desperately to respond. The Vols did so, thanks to a 27-yard pass from Ainge to tight end Chris Brown that carried to the Cal 28-yard line. UT scored the tying TD four plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Foster. He had a 12-yard touchdown catch, a 24-yard kickoff return and a 66-yard kickoff return in the quarter, along with five rushing yards.

KEY STAT

Tennessee ran the ball 10 times but gained just 15 yards. Ainge was 6 of 6 for 79 yards but Longshore was 5 of 6 for 42 yards.

DeSean Jackson, who led the NCAA with an 18.2-yard punt return average in 2006, broke several tackles en route to a 77-yard touchdown return that put Cal on top 21-14. On UT's second possession of the quarter Ainge found Lucas Taylor wide open for a 45-yard pass/run that carried to the Cal 5-yard line. Two plays later Ainge hit a wide-open Chris Brown with a one-yard TD pass to tie the score at 21-all. Cal needed just eight plays to go 60 yards for a TD that put the Golden Bears up 28-21. Longshore hit Robert Jordan with a three-yard middle screen pass for the score. Cal tacked on a 26-yard Jordan Key field 12 seconds shy of halftime to go to the locker room leading 31-21.
KEY PLAY

Jackson's 77-yard punt return. Three Vols got a hand on him near the left sideline but Jackson used his superior speed to go horizontally across the field and find a wall on the right side.

KEY PLAYER

Ainge. He kept Tennessee in the game by completing 9 of 11 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown in the quarter.

KEY STAT

Quarterbacks Ainge (15 of 17, 165 yards) and Longshore (11 of 16, 122 yards) combined to complete 26 of 33 passes for 287 yards in the first half.

Cal took the second-half kickoff and scored in just five plays to go up 38-21. After a 10-yard holding penalty, Justin Forsett opened the drive with a 13-yard run. Jackson caught a 12-yard pass, then raced 21 yards on an end-around. Longshore hit Lavelle Hawkins for 25 yards, then hit him with a 3-yard TD pass. Tennessee drove to a first-and-goal at the Cal 3-yard line but surrendered the ball on downs after two one-yard runs and two incompletions. UT closed to 38-28 on its next possession, however, with an 11-play, 73-yard TD drive, capped by Chris Brown's second TD catch of the game - a five-yarder.
KEY PLAY

Down 38-21, Tennessee's inability to punch the ball in after a first-and-goal at the Cal 3-yard line pretty much sealed the Vols' doom.

KEY PLAYER

Ainge. The Vol QB hit 14 of 18 passes for 113 yards during the quarter and also had a 10-yard scramble for a first down.

KEY STAT

Tennessee's defense forced a three-and-out on Cal's final possession of the quarter. It was only the second three-and-out by the Golden Bears all night.

Redshirt freshman Daniel Lincoln nailed his first collegiate field-goal, a 41-yarder, as UT closed within 38-31 on the fifth play of the quarter. After another three-and-out, Cal's offense began clicking again - zooming 70 yards in five plays to go up 45-31. After an incompletion, Longshore hit Hawkins for 24 yards, hit tight end Cameron Morrah for 24, hit Jordan for 10, then handed to Forsett, who raced 13 yards up the gut for the game's final score. Cal advanced to the Vol 1-yard line on its next possession but Longshore fumbled into the end zone and UT recovered for a touchback.
KEY PLAY

Forsett's 13-yard TD run with 9:10 remaining gave Cal a 14-point lead and pretty well sealed the deal.

KEY PLAYER

Forsett. The Cal tailback carried 10 times in the quarter, netting 81 yards and the game-clinching TD.

KEY STAT

Counting a 25-23 loss at UCLA in 1994, Phil Fulmer is 0-2 in openers played in the state of California, 14-0 in openers played everywhere else.
