The Tennessee Vols went 77 yards for a touchdown on their opening drive against Mississippi State. The big play was a 33-yard strike from Erik Ainge to Lucas Taylor and the score came on a three-yard toss from Ainge to Chris Brown. Late in the quarter, MSU tied the score on a 38-yard TD pass from Wesley Carroll to Tony Burks. The Bulldogs were driving again as the quarter ended.
KEY PLAY

On UT's fourth offensive play Ainge lofted a perfect strike to Taylor for a 33-yard gain to the MSU 29-yard line. The Vols scord five plays later to go up 7-0.

KEY PLAYER

Ainge. The Vol quarterback was 6 of 8 passing for 64 yards and a touchdown.

KEY STAT

Tennessee managed just 9 rushing yards in the period.

Anthony Dixon popped through a hole and rambled 30 yards for a TD on the first play of the quarter to give MSU a 14-7 lead. Two possessions later, Tennessee pulled even with a five-play, 78-yard drive that ended with a 51-yard TD pass from Ainge to Taylor. Lincoln missed a 26-yard field goal moments later - his first miss after hitting his first 8 attempts - but Ainge and Taylor hooked up on a 26-yard connection just before halftime to set up a 47-yard Lincoln kick that gave UT a 17-14 halftime lead.
KEY PLAY

The 51-yard TD pass from Ainge to Taylor. In addition to tying the score, that big play shifted the momentum and silenced a rowdy Bulldog crowd.

KEY PLAYER

Lucas Taylor. He had five catches for 100 yards in the quarter.

KEY STAT

After his 30-yard TD run, Dixon gained just four yards on seven carries the rest of the quarter.

Tennessee scored on its first possession of the half, building the lead to 24-14. Arian Foster had a 39-yard burst and got the TD on a one-yard dive. Carroll hit Jamayel Smith with a 14-yard TD pass to narrow the gap to 24-21. Lincoln nailed a 29-yard field goal late in the quarter to widen the lead to 27-21.
KEY PLAY

On third-and-12 at the MSU 17-yard line, Ainge threw an incompletion. MSU's Derek Pegues was called for unsportsmanlike conduct (hit to the head), however, giving the Vols a first-and-goal at the 8. They scored two plays later, padding the lead to 10 points.

KEY PLAYER

MSU's Carroll. He hit 5 of 5 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown in the period, keeping his team in the game.

KEY STAT

With both teams running the ball, each had just two possessions in the quarter. UT scored a TD and a field goal, while MSU got a TD.

Lincoln hit a 26-yard field goal with 5:54 left, expanding the lead to 30-21. He added a 43-yarder with 2:32 left to boost the gap to 33-21 and seal the victory.

An 11-yard burst by Montario Hardesty on third-and-one advanced the ball to MSU's 16-yard line, setting up the field goal that gave Tennessee a two-score cushion at 30-21.
