The Alabama Crimson Tide didn't wait to put Tennessee on its heels, DeMarcus Waldrop recovering an onsides kick on the opening kickoff. Leigh Tiffin hit a 39-yard field goal seven plays later to give Bama a 3-0 lead. The Tide upped the lead to 10-0 moments later, going 84 yards in nine plays. A four-yard pass from John Parker Wilson to Terry Grant produced the TD. Tennessee retaliated with a seven-play, 71-yard TD drive to pull within 10-7. Arian Foster had two 15-yard bursts on the march and got the score on a two-yard run. The Vols were driving again as the quarter ended.
KEY PLAY

On Bama's second possession Wilson threw incomplete on third-and-goal at the Vol 7-yard line. Dan Williams was flagged for roughing the passer, however, giving the Tide a first-and-goal at the 4, instead of fourth-and-goal at the 7. Given the reprieve, Bama got a TD instead of a field goal.

KEY PLAYER

Wilson. He completed 9 of 14 passes for 108 yards in the quarter.

KEY STAT

Tennessee piled up 161 yards in the quarter but still trailed 10-7.

Alabama roared back, going 86 yards in 11 plays to grab a 17-14 lead. The Tide marked again on its next possession, going 75 yards in 16 plays. DJ Hall got the score on a two-yard TD catch. Then, with nine seconds left, Ainge hit Chris Brown for 13 yards, and a 15-yard late-hit penalty against Bama enabled Daniel Lincoln to nail a 45-yard field goal on the final play of the half, narrowing the gap to 24-17.
KEY PLAY

Leading just 17-14, Bama faced a third-and-goal at the Vol 4-yard line. Eric Berry deflected a Wilson pass that was intercepted by Jonathan Hefney. KEY STAT

Four first-half penalties against UT's defense gave Bama first downs and extended drives that produced all three Tide touchdowns.
