Matchup: South Carolina

This week, Tennessee takes on South Carolina in Knoxville. This is our take on this Vols vs Gamecocks matchup.

Game #: 1137
Site: Knoxville
Date: Oct. 27
Conference: SECE
Coach Match-up:
For the Vols - Fulmer and for the Gamecocks - Spurrier

UT's line has allowed a nation's lows two sacks all season and the rushing attack averaged almost 200 yards during a three-game stretch until it was abandoned in the second half against Alabama. SC has allowed an SEC-high 26 sacks. The run game ranks 11th in the SEC.

UT's Erik Ainge continues to put up big numbers, but he wasn't nearly as effective in the second half against Alabama when he lost two veteran receivers – Lucas Taylor and Josh Briscoe. Spurrier rotated Blake Mitchell and Chris Smelley against Vanderbilt and neither was effective. They have combined for 12 touchdowns but 11 interceptions.

UT's Arian Foster (5.7 yards per carry) is sixth in the SEC in rushing (89.3 yards per game). Montario Hardesty and LaMarcus Coker are quality backups. Boyd and Davis have combined for 958 yards and 4.9 yards per carry.

UT's Lucas Taylor dropped to second in the SEC in receiving yards per game after a turf toe limited him against Alabama. Austin Rogers and Josh Briscoe rank among the SEC's top 10 in catches. SC's Kenny McKinley has 41 catches but the other wideouts combined have just 29.

UT's defensive line allows 157.7 rush yards per game and has recorded just six sacks. SC's run defense ranks 10th in the SEC (177.8 yards per game). End Eric Norwood returned two fumbles for touchdowns against Kentucky and he's the biggest disrupter for either team. He's got five sacks and 13 tackles for loss. The other end is Casper Brinkley (nine tackles behind the line).

Rico McCoy and Jerod Mayo continue to lead the Vols in tackles. Despite losing All-SEC Jasper Brinkley to an injury, Rodney Paulk, Marvin Sapp and true freshman Cliff Matthews have played well.

UT is last in the SEC in pass defensive efficiency. The Vols have allowed 13 touchdown passes, intercepted five passes and opponents gain 249 yards per game. SC allows a nation's best 145.9 passing yards per game. Strong safety Emanuel Cook is a beast. Captain Munnerlyn is the top cover corner.

UT's Daniel Lincoln has missed one kick this year and Britton Colquitt is a terrific punter. Kick returns are adequate. Punt returns need improving. Ryan Succop averages 43.7 yards per punt and has hit 9 of 12 field-goal attempts. Munnerlyn is fifth in the SEC in punt returns (10.8). Chris Culliver averages 24.8 yards on kick returns. SC leads the SEC in kick coverage. UT is ninth.

UT has regained the home field advantage with a big win over Georgia. SC won its last game in Neyland Stadium, spoiling the retirement of Peyton Manning's number. Spurrier has a way of gigging UT.
