Late in the quarter Tennessee safety Eric Berry returned a South Carolina fumble 52 yards to the Gamecock 4-yard line and a face-mask penalty advanced the ball to the 2. Arian Foster scored two plays later for a 7-0 Vol lead.
KEY PLAY

Berry's fumble return. It came after Vol cornerback DeAngelo Willingham stripped SC's Freddie Brown after an 18-yard reception carried to the Vol 44 yard line.

KEY PLAYER

Berry. Neither offense was able to muster much in the period, so the Vol safety's return was just about the only significant play in the quarter.

KEY STAT

Tennessee had just 35 yards of total offense (11 rushing, 24 passing) but still led 7-0.

Berry was at it again on the first play of the second period, intercepting a Chris Smelley pass and returning it 13 yards to the Carolina 44-yard line. Montario Hardesty scored from three yards out 11 plays later to give UT a 14-0 lead. On the Vols' next possession, a 37-yard pass from Erik Ainge to Lucas Taylor sparked a 7-play, 72-yard drive that ended with a five-yard TD pass to Josh Briscoe, padding UT's lead to 21-0. UT's Daniel Lincoln missed a 51-yard field goal on the final play of the half.
KEY PLAY

On third-and-11 at the South Carolina 19-yard line, Ainge hit Austin Rogers for 13 yards on a slant route, extending a drive that eventually produced the Vols' second TD.

KEY PLAYER

Ainge. The Vol QB hit 12 of 15 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in the quarter.

KEY STAT

Counting the second half vs. North Carolina, all of last week's game with Vanderbilt and the first half vs. UT, South Carolina had gone eight quarters without a touchdown.

South Carolina advanced to the Vol 5-yard line on its first possession of the second half but gave the ball up after a one-yard run and three incompletions. The Gamecocks got the ball back at the UT 39-yard after a short punt and scored in nine plays to pull within 21-7. Blake Mitchell, who replaced Smelley in the second quarter, completed passes of 14 and 12 yards on the drive, then got the TD on a sneak. Carolina cashed in again on its next possession, going 86 yards in just six plays to pull within 21-14. Mitchell completed passes of 21 yards to Kenny McKinley and 19 yards to Jared Cook but Cory Boyd got the TD on a 29-yard run.
KEY PLAY

Boyd's 29-yard TD run. Carolina scored with such ease on the drive that it clearly had the momentum, even though the Vols still had the lead.

KEY PLAYER

Boyd. He carried just five times in the quarter but picked up 70 yards and a touchdown.

KEY STAT

After compiling just 146 yards in the first two quarters combined, South Carolina piled up 200 in the third. UT had just 66 in the period.

Carrying over the momentum it built in the third quarter, Carolina scored on its first possession of the final period to tie the score at 21-all. Mitchell completed five of six passes on the drive, hitting McKinley from 8 yards out for the TD. Carolina drove to UT's 23-yard line on its next possession but Willingham caused and recovered a Mike Davis fumble. Ryan Succup hit a 49-yard field goal with 1:24 left in regulation but LaMarcus Coker returned the ensuing kickoff 37 yards to the UT 47. Eight plays later Lincoln nailed a game-tying 48-yard field goal with 0:05 left, sending the game into overtime. OVERTIME: UT picked up one first down, then Lincoln booted a 27-yard field goal. Succup missed a 40-yarder moments later, ending the game.
KEY PLAY

On Tennessee's game-tying march at the end of regulation Arian Foster fumbled. Vol guard Jacques McClendon recovered at the SC 26-yard line, however, and Lincoln hit his game-tying field goal four plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Lincoln. The kid hit a game-tying 48-yard field goal with five seconds left in regulation, then nailed a game-winning 27-yarder in overtime. Who else could it be?

KEY STAT

South Carolina outgained Tennessee 501 yards to 317 but lost four turnovers (two fumbles and two interceptions) to UT's one (an interception).
