Hughes in the Fold

In a 2008 senior class strapped for defensive tackles the Vols decided to take a chance on a strapping tackle with a high ceiling and a low profile.

Montori Hughes, a 6-foot-5, 255-pound tackle from Siegel, announced his commitment to the Vols today after a short courtship that began when he first caught the attention of Tennessee coaches at the Toyota East-West Tennessee All-Star Classic played on Dec. 15 at Carson-Newman College.

Hughes, who was voted Region 4-5A Defensive MVP paid his official visit to Knoxville over the weekend and reportedly chose the Big Orange over offers from Tennessee State and Jacksonville State.

Tennessee's defensive staff liked the intensity, energy and mobility Hughes brings to the position. He needs to add size and strength but has the frame to add weight without losing speed.

A versatile athlete, Hughes averages double figures in scoring and rebounding for Siegel High School. He played in the same league as Tennessee commitment Rodriguez Wilks who was named Class 5A Mr. Football and Region 4-5A MVP.

Hughes is the Vols 12th commitment in the Class of 2008 with national signing day only eight days away.
