Vols playing 'giveaway'

The Tennessee football team is generous to a fault. The Vols are giving away points the way Santa Claus gives away toys.

Through the first seven games, Tennessee has committed 16 turnovers and allowed four kicks to be blocked. These mishaps have led to 49 of the 144 points scored by Vol foes. In other words, better than one-third (34 percent) of the points Tennessee has surrendered this year were the result of mistakes by the offense or kicking game.

Unfortunately for the Vols, the trend seems to be getting worse, instead of better. Tennessee lost six turnovers (three fumbles, three interceptions) last Saturday against Alabama. The Crimson Tide converted these gifts into 24 of its 34 points en route to a 34-14 romp.

Mindful of his team's generosity, head coach Phillip Fulmer says the Vols have been ''our own worst enemy.''

Obviously, he hasn't been monitoring the message boards and sports-talk shows lately.
