The changing of the guards at UT

The guards who started Tennessee's 26-3 loss to Miami last weekend will start this weekend's game at Mississippi State on the Vol bench.

Chavis Smith and Sean Young have been benched in favor of Jason Respert and Anthony Herrera. Respert started UT's first three games of the season and Herrera started the first two, but both have been slowed by injuries since.

''The biggest thing is that we, as a staff, felt we needed to get a little more consistent play from our guard positions,'' offensive coordinator Randy Sanders said. ''We're looking for a little bit of an answer there.''

Respert, in particular, has been banged up this season. He still isn't 100 percent but the Vol staff is hoping to get maybe 50 snaps or so from him.

''Hopefully, Jason will be healthy enough to hold up,'' Sanders said. ''I have no doubt that he will not be able to play the entire game. He won't be able to go out and play 60, 70, 80 plays -- we'll have to do some subbing there -- but that is one spot we felt like we needed a little more consistency from.''

Head coach Phillip Fulmer, however, said all all four guards will see plenty of action vs. MSU and that the depth chart change was ''more on paper than anything else ... to get their attention.''
