Vols win final exhibition game

The Tennessee Vols closed out their preseason schedule with a win over Unibanka Cesis of Latvia 108-80. UT will have Gardner-Webb come to Knoxville in one week to open the 2002-03 season.

Ron Slay and Brandon Crump combined for 56 points as the Vols got a 108-80 win over Unibanka Cesis of Latvia in UT's final exhibition game.

Slay scored 32 points, while Crump chipped in a would-be career-best 24 points.

Slay and Crump hit a combined 20-of-29 from the field and 15-of-17 from the free throw line.

Lamarky Ward led BC Cesis (Latvia) with 29 points.

Freshman Stanley Asumnu, who scored just two points in his UT debuts last week, responded to Peterson challenge for more production tonight, pumping in 12 off the bench.

Led by Crump's 18 first-half points, the Vols raced to a quick 6-0 advantage and led 19-7 at the first media timeout with 15:32 left. The sophomore's first-half explosion bettered his best scoring night last season when he tallied 16 against Alaska-Anchorage.

UT connected on 57.9 percent of its first-half shots and took a 60-31 lead into halftime.

Tennessee opens its 2002-03 regular season Nov. 22 with a 7:30 p.m. (EST) tipoff against Gardner-Webb at Thompson-Boling Arena.
