44 from UT make frosh honor roll

The University of Tennessee placed 44 student-athletes on the 2008 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll, the conference announced Tuesday.

The rowing team led the way with nine honorees. The baseball team produced a pair of honorees while men's basketball had one and women's basketball had three. Three football players also were honored, and the men's and women's golf teams each placed one on the list. Women's soccer landed five academic standouts to go along with four from the softball team.

There were three honorees from the men's swimming and diving team and four from the women's swimming and diving squad. Men's and women's tennis each placed two student-athletes on the list. Two members of the women's track and field team were honored, as were one each from men's track and field and women's volleyball.

The 2008 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2007-08 academic calendar.

Each student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; be on scholarship or a letterwinner; have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.

Tennessee had 44 student-athletes on the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll, 32 on the winter academic honor roll and 84 on the spring academic honor roll. Overall, UT had 204 student-athletes recognized for their academic work in the 2007-08 school year.
