Thursday Afternoon Practice Report

The Vols appear as ready as ever to go to Nashville and try to make it 20 straight over the Vanderbilt Commodores. Coach Phillip Fulmer did have a bit of bad news on Thursday and it regarded, surprise surprise, an injury.

"I like the way that our football team this week has approached the challenge, preparation getting looks at the different problems from Vanderbilt's offense," Coach Fulmer said after practice. Fulmer was pleased with the way the scout team ran Vanderbilt's option offense against the first team defense.

It appears that senior Willie Miles will not be able to play this weekend. He injured his groin muscle on Wednesday during practice. Coach Fulmer said Miles will travel to Nashville with the team, but his doubtful that he will be able to play. Julian Battle and Jabari Greer will start at corner with Robert Boulware and Corey Larkins coming in for relief. Fulmer said that if an emergency were to occur, Jonathan Wade could play corner, but that is doubtful.

Coach Fulmer did say the surface in Nashville could possibly cause footing problems for defensive backs. He said he has always felt that footing for defensive backs is as important for that group as any position on the field. It is likely that is will be in the high 40s to low 50s on Saturday, so the ground should be cold and not too bad for Tennessee's DBs.

Casey Clausen was able to do most everything in practice the last two days that the coaches would have like him to be able to do. It is still unclear as to which quarterback is going to be the first off of the sideline. Clausen has not been restricted in what he has needed to do in practice this week. I anticipate Clausen starting and giving way to James Banks depending on how the scoreboard swings.

Eddie Moore and Rashad Moore should be ready to play this weekend.

The Vol will have a walk-through on Friday afternoon in the Coliseum. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:32 CST on Saturday morning. The game will be telecast by Jefferson-Pilot.
