Scrimmage highlights

As usual, the defense was ahead of the offense as Tennessee held its first full-scale scrimmage of the preseason Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

Here are the highlights:

On the third play of the afternoon Jonathan Crompton found Gerald Jones (who started ahead of Austin Rogers and Josh Briscoe) on a short pass that the nifty Jones turned into an 18-yard gain.

On the fourth play of the afternoon, defensive end Robert Ayers stripped Montario Hardesty at the defense's 35-yard line and recovered the ball himself.

Crompton found tight end Luke Stocker for a 14-yard gain.

Crompton, throwing under extreme duress, was intercepted by Demetrice Morley. The turnover was nullified, however, because a quick whistle had blown the play dead.

No. 2 quarterback Nick Stephens hit Josh Briscoe with a 13-yard pass. Briscoe lost the ball as he was being tackled but caught it a second time while lying flat on his back.

Linebacker Nevin McKenzie sacked Stephens for a two-yard loss.

Briscoe found a crease in Tennessee's zone, caught a strike from Stephens, broke a couple of tackles and rambled 37 yards.

Freshman Tauren Poole knifed off right tackle on a two-yard touchdown run.

Crompton found Lucas Taylor on a quick slant for 11 yards.

Stocker turned upfield before securing the ball, thereby dropping a potential first-down pass from Crompton. Crompton came back on third and eight, however, to read a blitz and hit Montario Hardesty with a screen pass that picked up 15 yards.

Safety Demetrice Morley jumped a quick hitch to Stocker but just missed the interception.

Crompton fooled everyone at Neyland Stadium (including all 11 defenders) with a tremendous play fake, rolled to his left and hit Austin Rogers with a 15-yard pass.

Defensive tackle Donald Langley threw Lennon Creer for a one-yard loss.

No. 3 quarterback B. J. Coleman found fullback Austin Johnson for a 12-yard gain, then hit tailback Tauren Poole with a screen pass two plays later that picked up 14 yards.

Langley dumped Poole for a loss of three.

Cornerback Brent Vinson leaped high to barely tip away a Coleman pass, narrowly averting what would've been 24-yard TD toss to walk-on tight end Ben Lehning.

Jakouri Williams, the No. 5 tailback, showed a nice burst on an eight-yard run. Two plays later he bounced outside for a 13-yard gain.

Nick Stephens hooked up with redshirt freshman Tyler Maples for a nine-yard gain, then hit Maples again three plays later for a seven-yard touchdown.

Gerald Jones, stopped for no gain on an earlier attempt as a direct-snap tailback, barreled around right end for eight yards on his second try. Four plays later Jones used a nifty move to turn a short pass from Crompton into a 14-yard gain.

Tailback Montario Hardesty shook free for a 10-yard gain.

Tackle Victor Thomas sacked Crompton for a loss of six yards.

Tackle Dan Williams stuffed tailback Lennon Creer for a one-yard loss.

Coleman, anticipating a blitz, found Poole for eight yards on a hot read.

Linebacker Nevin McKenzie threw Poole for a two-yard loss.

Cornerback DeAngelo Willingham made a dandy break on the ball to break up a Coleman pass.

Stephens hooked up with Tyler Maples, who used a nice move to extend the gain to 17 yards.

Linebacker Ellis Wilson belted Hardesty for a four-yard loss.

Stephens found Gerald Jones for a 17-yard gain, then hit tight end Brandon Warren with a four-yard toss to the one-yard line. Lennon Creer scored on the very next play.

Crompton scrambled for a gain of eight to the seven-yard line.

Willingham made another great break on the ball, this time preventing a third-and-five Crompton pass from the 7-yard line.
