UT scrimmage highlights

Tennessee's second full-scale scrimmage of the preseason, staged Saturday night at Neyland Stadium, offered a little bit of everything.

There were some dandy runs, several nice gains in the passing game and an assortment of big plays on defense, as well.

Here's a recap of the best and worst of Scrimmage No. 2:

Junior tailback Montario Hardesty took a safety-valve pass from Jonathan Crompton, broke two tackles and picked up six tough yards.

Sophomore tailback Lennon Creer made a nice cut on a run up the middle for a seven-yard gain.

Defensive tackle Dan Williams dropped freshman tailback Tauren Poole for a one-yard loss.

Poole bounced back four plays later, breaking multiple tackles on a 21-yard ramble.

Creer bounced outside for a nine-yard gain.

No. 2 quarterback Nick Stephens hit FSU transfer Brandon Warren with a short pass that the shifty tight end turned into a 15-yard gain.

Creer showed a nice burst of speed on a 22-yard run but lost the ball when hammered by freshman linebacker Rod Wilks.

Arian Foster got four consecutive touches during his first scrimmage action of the preseason. He ran 11 yards, then made a nifty cut on a five-yard burst up the middle. He rambled 18 yards with a flare pass, then lined up at flanker and caught a six-yard pass.

Sophomore safety Dennis Rogan was flagged for interference on a throw from Crompton to Josh Briscoe.

Crompton hit Gerald Jones in traffic with an eight-yard touchdown pass.

Denarius Moore made a nice catch of a Nick Stephens pass and turned upfield for a 10-yard gain.

Linebacker Nick Reveiz was called for pass interference against wideout Quintin Hancock.

Poole showed great quickness by darting 11 yards.

Stephens made a fine throw that would've been a 15-yard gain to the 3-yard line but Denarius Moore dropped the ball.

Gerald Jones took a handoff on an end-around, faked cornerback Antonio Gaines out of his jock and wound up gaining 14 yards.

Redshirt freshman quarterback B. J. Coleman found Quintin Hancock for a 17-yard gain.

Cornerback DeAngelo Willingham stormed into the backfield to throw Poole for an eight-yard loss.

Juco transfer Gerald Williams, playing middle linebacker, stopped Poole for no gain, then dropped him for a two-yard loss three plays later.

Senior tailback JaKouri Williams showed his speed on a 20-yard run against third-team defenders.

Sophomore linebacker LaMarcus Thompson made the stop on three consecutive plays. First, he dropped JaKouri Williams for no gain, then he and freshman linebacker Herman Lathers combined to drop Williams for a two-yard loss. Thompson then made a touchdown-saving tackle on Ahmad Paige, who appeared bound for the end zone after gathering in an 18-yard pass from Stephens.

Eric Berry's long-awaited, much-ballyhooed debut as a direct-snap tailback proved anticlimactic. He was dropped for a five-yard loss.

Gerald Williams sacked Stephens for a four-yard loss.

Stephens hit Gerald Jones, who made a nice cut to produce a gain of 16.

Tackle Donald Langley threw Lennon Creer for a two-yard loss.

Linebacker Nevin McKenzie sacked Stephens for a loss of four.

Tackle Demonte Bolden sacked Coleman for a loss of eight.

Linebacker Ellix Wilson sacked Coleman for a loss of five.

Crompton hit fullback Kevin Cooper with a short pass that turned into a 14-yard gain because of a coverage bust.

End Wes Brown sacked Stephens for a loss of five.

Freshman cornerback Prentiss Waggner intercepted a pass thrown by walk-on QB Tanner Shamblin.

Coleman made a fine throw to Josh Briscoe for a gain of 33 yards.
