AquaVols 2nd at Nike Cup
''It was a great competition,'' head coach John Trembley said. ''We had some good performances with our freshmen, they competed really well.'' The final night started with the mile (1650 free) and Tennessee placed three swimmers in the finals. Casey Dauw won his third event of the championships by taking the 1650 free in a time of 15:28.86. Jason Thomas finished fifth with a time of 15:42.13 while Evan Nylander placed eighth (15:52.27). The Vols also scored three places in the 200 backstroke. Leading the way was senior Paulo Machado with a time of 1:48.73, giving him second place. Also scoring was Michael Gross (tenth) and Nylander (eighth). Nylanders time of 1:51.49 in the morning session was his lifetime best. Tennessee freestylers took charge again, placing three Vols in the finals. Renato Gueraldi touched the wall for first place in a Nike Cup record time of 43.86. The mark was Gueraldis second Nike Cup record and a personal best. Tyler Gustafson and Greg Simpson added to the scoring for UT. Gustafson finished 11th in a time of 45.82 and Simpson placed 12th with a time of 46.30 Andrew Bree finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:59.35. Michael Russo placed seventh, clocking a time of 2:02.81. Kiel Huston and Evan Fischer also scored for the Vols, finishing ninth and 11th respectively. In the 200 fly, Tennessee scored three places. Jamie Graves led the way with a lifetime best of 1:48.01, good enough for second place. Dauw finished 11th in a lifetime best 1:51.62 and David Zeman hit the wall for 14th place with a time of 1:51.69. The Volunteers closed the evening with a first place finish by the 400 freestyle relay team. The quartet of Gueraldi, Duryea, Bree and Simpson posted a time of 2:59.80 to secure second place for the Vols. For the championships, the ninth-ranked Vols won nine out of the 18 swimming events and set a total of four Nike Cup records. The Tennessee multiple winners were Dauw and Gueraldi. Dauw won the 500 free, 400 I.M and the 1650 free. Gueraldi took the crown in both the 50 free and 100 free. ''With some more work and focus we can be a pretty good team,'' Trembley said. ''The future looks good.''
