Scrimmage highlights

Tennessee's No. 1 offense went 49 yards in three plays to score on its opening possession of today's final full-scale scrimmage … and made it look easy.

Alas, nothing would be easy the remainder of the day.

With a relentless pass rush forcing numerous sacks and hurried throws, the Vols' air attack struggled mightily.

That said, here are the notable plays:

Untouched on a blitz, linebacker Ellix Wilson sacked backup QB Nick Stephens for an eight-loss.

With No. 1 tailback Arian Foster held out to keep him fresh for the opener at UCLA, No. 2 tailback Montario Hardesty came out like gangbusters – breaking a half-dozen tackles in ripping off gains of 31, 24 and 20 yards on his first three carries.

Jonathan Crompton completed an 18-yard TD strike to Gerald Jones to complete the No. 1 offense's first possession.

Junior defensive end Wes Brown and sophomore defensive end Ben Martin sacked B. J. Coleman for losses of seven and two yards within a three-play span.

Defensive tackle Demonte Bolden swatted down a pass by Coleman.

Linebacker Nevin McKenzie sacked Coleman for a five-yard loss.

Cornerback Brent Vinson made a dandy break on the ball to break up a Crompton pass intended for Austin Rogers.

Daniel Lincoln nailed a 24-yard field goal.

Crompton threw over the middle to tight end Luke Stocker, who barreled over two would-be tacklers for a 26-yard gain.

McKenzie sacked sacked Crompton for a seven-yard loss.

Crompton hit Gerald Jones on a quick hitch for a gain of 15.

Lincoln hit a 39-yard field goal.

Ellix Wilson sacked Nick Stephens for a six-yard loss.

Reserve tailback Lennon Creer bolted 12 yards.

Demetrice Morley made a wicked hit on Quintin Hancock, a split second after he gathered in a six-yard pass from Coleman.

Creer made a nice cut and rambled 23 yards.

Chad Cunningham made a fine "pooch" punt from the defense's 42-yard line that was downed at the 4-yard line.

Ahmad Paige held on to a 17-yard pass from Stephens, despite a punishing lick from Morley.

Defensive tackle Victor Thomas stuffed Creer for a three-yard loss.

Cornerback DeAngelo Willingham made a spectacular break on the ball and nearly intercepted a pass by Stephens.

Stephens hit redshirt freshman Tyler Maples for a gain of 12.

Defensive end Robert Ayers sacked Coleman for a loss of four.

Coleman hit Hancock for a 14-yard gain.

Crompton hit Austin Rogers for a gain of 10.

Freshman tailback Tauren Poole turned a swing pass from Crompton into an 11-yard gain.

Crompton found Gerald Jones for an 11-yard gain.

Crompton hit Hancock for a gain of 15.

Creer used a nifty move to turn a short toss from Crompton into a 13-yard gain.

Creer scored standing up from five yards out.

Starting at the defense's 25-yard line, Stephens needed just two plays to dent the end zone. The score came on a 13-yard TD hookup with Hancock.

Starting from the defense's 25-yard line, Crompton hit Lucas Taylor with back-to-back passes of 10 and 15 yards for a touchdown.

Willingham made a huge hit on Hancock, limiting him to a one-yard gain on a pass from Coleman.

Cunningham hit a 36-yard field goal.

Josh Briscoe made a beautiful diving catch of a 15-yard pass from Crompton.

Arian Foster, inserted into the lineup for one play, ran 11 yards for a touchdown to end the scrimmage.
