Despite a 25-yard run by Arian Foster on Tennessee's first offensive snap, the Vols' opening drive petered out. Drive No. 2, however, produced a five-play, 44-yard touchdown march. The big plays were a 28-yard pass from Jonathan Crompton to Lucas Taylor and a 20-yard TD pass from Crompton to Gerald Jones. UT tacked another TD on possession No. 3, racing 65 yards in three plays to build a 14-0 lead. The key players were the same - Taylor turning a screen pass into a 48-yard gain and Crompton hitting Jones on a 14-yard fade route two plays later.
KEY PLAY

On second-and-16 at the Vol 49-yard line, Crompton found Taylor, who made a nifty cutback to turn a short pass into a 28-yard gain. The Vols scored their first TD two plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Crompton (6 of 8 passing for 119 yards and 2 TDs), Jones (2 catches for 34 yards and 2 TDs), linebacker Adam Myers-White (2 minus-yardage tackles in a three-play span.

UAB marched to the UT 20-yard line before surrendering the ball on downs. The Blazers advanced to the Vol 9-yard line on their next possession but Eric Berry stepped in front of Frantrell Forrest to intercept at the goal line, stopping the threat.
KEY PLAY

Berry's interception. A touchdown there would've narrowed the gap to 14-7 and given the Blazers a huge lift psychologically.

KEY PLAYER

UAB quarterback Joe Webb kept the Blazers in the game by completing 5 of 7 passes for 42 yards in the quarter. He also was the key player in a negative sense, trying to force the second-down pass that Berry intercepted at the Vol goal line.

KEY STAT

Tennessee was 0 for 3 on third-down conversions in the quarter and managed just 54 yards, down from 164 in the first quarter.

Tennessee marched to the UAB 47-yard line but Crompton was sacked on first down and intercepted on third down by Marquis Coleman. UAB converted the favorable field position into a 27-yard drive that ended with a 47-yard Swayze Waters field goal, narrowing the gap to 14-3. Arian Foster took over the game at this point. The Vol tailback ran 16 yards, turned a screen pass into a 22-yard gain, then bolted 31 yards to the Blazer 6-yard line. Montario Hardesty got the TD on the very next play, padding the lead to 21-3. No. 3 tailback Lennon Creer showcased his skills on the next possession, slithering 5 yards on his first carry and 45 yards for a TD on his second one to cap an eight-play, 76-yard drive that widened the gap to 28-3.
KEY PLAY

Foster's 31-yard run to set up the clinching TD. A terrific block from fullback Kevin Cooper sprung Foster. The Vols scored on the very next play to take a 21-3 lead.

KEY PLAYER

Creer. He carried two times for 50 yards and a touchdown in the period. It would be tough to top that.

KEY STAT

Tennessee turned the tables on UAB by playing keep-away. The Vols ran 24 plays and gained 179 yards, while limiting the Blazers to 10 plays and 49 yards.

Vol linebacker Ellix Wilson intercepted Webb on the second play of the period and UT immediately launched an eight-play, 56-yard TD drive. Creer was the workhorse, rushing for gains of 16, 8, 5, 6 and 5 yards before scoring standing up from 3 yards out. Daniel Lincoln's fifth PAT of the game concluded the scoring at 35-3.
KEY PLAY

Wilson's interception snuffed any comeback hopes the Blazers might have entertained.

KEY PLAYER

Creer again. The sophomore tailback carried six times for 43 yards and a TD on the final scoring drive.

KEY STAT

Tennessee was 4 for 4 in the Red Zone with four TDs. The Vols did not attempt a field goal all game.
