Capping a drive begun late in the first quarter, Daniel Lincoln nailed a 47-yard field goal that narrowed the gap to 7-3. Tennessee added a 35-yard Lincoln field goal on its next possession, trimming the deficit to 7-6. The Vols had the momentum until Crompton and tailback Arian Foster botched a handoff at the UT 5-yard line. Auburn's Jake Ricks recovered, boosting the Tiger lead to 14-6.
KEY PLAY

The botched handoff. It was the biggest play of the game by far.

KEY PLAYER

Lincoln. His clutch field goals kept Tennessee in striking distance.

KEY STAT

Tennessee was just 1 of 7 on third-down conversions in the first half, which is why Auburn was able to keep the ball 17:03 to Tennessee's 12:57.

After a short Auburn punt, Tennessee opened its second possession of the second half at the Tiger 44-yard line. The Vols responded with a three-and-out. Dennis Rogan returned an interception to the Tiger 37-yard line moments later, and UT was marching toward a potential game-tying touchdown as the quarter ended.
KEY PLAY

Rogan's interception. It provided a short-field scoring opportunity for a Vol offense that never seemed to be in-sync all afternoon.

KEY PLAYER

Rogan. His 38-yard return was the closest thing Tennessee had to an offensive highlight in the game.

KEY STAT

Auburn gained just 37 net yards in the quarter.

A two-yard run by Montario Hardesty on the first play of the period narrowed Auburn's lead to 14-12. Crompton's two-point conversion pass to Jones in the right flat was foiled when Jones was smothered at the 2-yard line. Tennessee's subsequent possessions began at the Auburn 38, the Vol 42, the Auburn 46 and the Vol 46 but the Vols punted the ball away each time after a three-and-out. With just under 2:00 left Auburn's Kodi Burns completed a nine-yard pass to Montez Billings on third-and-four at the Tiger 11-yard line that enabled the Tigers to maintain possession and run out the clock.
KEY PLAY

Every play Tennessee ran following Hardesty's touchdown was key because the Vols couldn't gain on any of them.

KEY PLAYER

Burns. His clutch pass to Billings sealed UT's doom.

KEY STAT

Tennessee's final four possessions of the game produced 13 net yards and zero first downs.
