What follows is a quarter-by-quarter recap of Tennessee's 34-3 defeat of Mississippi State Saturday night at Neyland Stadium:

After sustaining a 13-play, six-minute drive, Mississippi State came up empty when Adam Carlson missed a 39-yard field goal. Tennessee got a 19-yard run from Arian Foster on its first scrimmage play but did not manage another first down all quarter. Worse, receiver Gerald Jones suffered a sprained knee and did not return to action all game.
KEY PLAY

After Lee completed 4 of 5 passes in marching MSU to a second-and-4 at the Vol 19-yard line, Chris Walker sacked the MSU quarterback for minus-3 and put him out of the game. The Dogs wound up missing a field goal two plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Vol safety Eric Berry. He recorded 4 stops in the quarter, including a sack.

KEY STAT

Mississippi State had the ball 11:17 to UT's 3:43.

Tennessee drove to the MSU 19-yard line before stalling. Daniel Lincoln hit a 36-yard field goal for a 3-0 Vol lead. The Bulldogs got a 43-yard Carlson field goal to tie the score but UT answered with a 28-yard Lincoln boot to take a 6-3 lead.
KEY PLAY

Vol quarterback Nick Stephens scrambled 18 yards to the Mississippi State 23-yard line, and Lincoln hit his first field goal four plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Vol tailback Arian Foster. He had seven carries for 40 yards in the quarter, including a 19-yard run that set up UT's second field goal.

KEY STAT

Tennessee piled up seven first downs in the period, after mustering just one in the first quarter.

A 40-yard return of the second-half kickoff by Dennis Rogan boosted UT, which drove 53 yards in 11 plays and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run by Montario Hardesty to go up 13-3. The Vols had a chance to expand the lead but Lincoln missed badly on a 34-yard field goal.
KEY PLAY

On third-and-10 at the MSU 21-yard line, Stephens hit Austin Rogers for a 20-yard gain to the 1-foot line. The Vols scored the game's first TD on the next official play.

KEY PLAYER

Stephens. The Vol QB hit 5 of 9 passes for 88 yards in the quarter, including a 45-yard bomb to Denarius Moore.

KEY STAT

Tennessee's defense limited Mississippi State to 9 plays, 8 yards of total offense, 1 first down and 0 of 2 on third-down conversions in the quarter.

A Tyson Lee pass that ricocheted off UT linebacker Ellix Wilson was intercepted by Eric Berry, who returned it 72 yards for a touchdown to give the Vols a 20-3 lead. Three snaps later Demetrice Morley intercepted a Lee pass and set sail 32 yards for a TD that widened the gap to 27-3. Tennessee closed the scoring with a 51-yard drive that consisted of 12 consecutive Lennon Creer runs, the last being a one-yard TD plunge that sealed a 34-3 victory.
KEY PLAY

Berry's interception return. It ignited a 21-0 fourth-quarter rally that turned a tight game into a romp.

KEY PLAYER

Ellix Wilson. The Vol linebacker tipped a pass that was intercepted by DeAngelo Willingham on the first play of the quarter and also deflected the pass Berry intercepted and returned for a TD.

KEY STAT

Tennessee converted 7 of 15 third-down plays while limiting Mississippi State to 4 of 14.
