After Dennis Rogan returned the opening kickoff 40 yards, Tennessee marched to the Wyoming 31-yard line. Defensive end Mike Neuhaus batted and intercepted a Nick Stephens pass, however, and returned it 55 yards to the 4-yard line. Quarterback Chris Stutzriem completed a TD pass to Greg Genho on Wyoming's first offensive snap, producing a 7-0 lead with less than three minutes gone.
KEY PLAY

Neuhaus's 55-yard interception return to the 4-yard line. The Cowboys rank dead last among the 119 Div. 1-A teams in scoring (11 points per game), so they needed some sort of spark from their defense. Neuhaus provided it.

KEY PLAYER

Neuhaus. Neither offense did anything worthy of note all quarter.

KEY STAT

Wyoming gained just 29 yards on 10 offensive snaps, yet the Cowboys led 7-0.

Wyoming moved to the Vol 14-yard line but Jake Scott missed a 31-yard field goal. Two plays later, however, Stephens was picked off by linebacker Ward Dobbs, who reurned the pick 24 yards for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead. The PAT was missed. Jonathan Cromton took over at quarterback for Tennessee but could not generate any points.
KEY PLAY

Dobbs' interception return. Again, Wyoming's offense is putrid, so its only chance to win was for its defense had to make some big plays.

KEY PLAYER

Dobbs. As in the first quarter, none of the offensive players on either side did anything worth noting.

KEY STAT

Wyoming converted 4 of 5 third-down tries in the period and outgained UT 122 yards to 12.

Tennessee's offense finally showed some life, going 64 yards in 11 plays to pull within 13-7. Lennon Creer, filling in for injured tailback Arian Foster (thigh bruise), had runs of 23 and 9 yards on the march. Gerald Jones got the score on an eight-yard pass from Crompton. Tennessee's defense gave the offense good field position moments later, Walter Fisher forcing a fumble that Rogan recovered at UT's 48-yard line. Three plays gained two yards, however, and the Vols punted. A short punt by Wyoming gave UT another golden opportunity - this time at the Cowboy 43-yard line, but the Vols again ran three plays and punted.
KEY PLAY

On third-and-10 at the Wyoming 18-yard line, Crompton hit Austin Rogers for an 11-yard gain to the 7-yard line. Tennessee scored its only TD two plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Vol defensive end Wes Brown. He recorded two tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries in the period, helping UT get back in the game.

KEY STAT

After gaining just 65 yards in the first two quarters combined, UT gained 71 in Quarter No. 3.

A 14-yard completion to Denarius Moore and a questionable 15-yard pass interference on Wyoming helped UT advance to a second-and-eight at the Cowboy 19-yard line but three incompletions turned the ball over on downs with 8:21 to play. Tennessee advanced to the Wyoming 39-yard line on its final possession of the game but a sack and three incompletions sealed the Vols' doom.
KEY PLAY

The three incompletions once UT reached Wyoming's 19-yard line. A touchdown and PAT there puts the Vols on top 14-13.

KEY PLAYER

UT defensive tackle Demonte Bolden. He recorded two tackles for loss, helping keep UT in the game.

KEY STAT

Vol quarterbacks Stephens (3 of 9, 27 yards) and Crompton (11 of 27, 91 yards) combined to complete just 14 of 36 passes for 118 yards.
