Lady Vols Subdue Notre Dame

No. 5 Tennessee bounced back from a buzzer beating in Austin a week ago by breezing past No. 12 Notre Dame, 77-61, in Indianapolis Saturday.

The Lady Vols took the lead (14-13) and launched a 17-2 run on Kara Lawson's 3-pointer with 12:16 remaining in the first half and never looked back.

Playing tough perimeter defense, Tennessee held Notre Dame to only 30.6 percent (19-of-62) from the field and 12.5 percent (1-of-8) from beyond the three-point arc. Conversely, the Lady Vols knocked down 6-of-14 of their three-point attempts for a 15-point advantage.

Gwen Jackson paced Tennessee's point producers with 16 after only scoring two points in the Lady Vols one-point setback against Texas. UT sophomore Shyra Ely had a successful homecoming appearance in Indianapolis, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Her effort on the boards represented 33.3 percent of Tennessee's total, as the Irish enjoyed a 44-30 rebounding advantage.

But Tennessee was able to offset Notre Dame's edge in rebounding by holding Notre Dame's top two scorers — Alicia Rattay and Jacqueline Batteast — to seven points combined on 2-of-20 shooting. Batteast, who scored five points, came into the game averaging 16.1 points per game while Rattay, who was averaging 13.1, had but two points.

UT guard Tasha Butts scored a season-high 13 points for the second consecutive game and matched point guard Loree Moore for team-high honors in assists with five. The Lady Vols kept their perfect record vs. Notre Dame intact at 15-0 in a series that began in 1983.

After building a 36-25 cushion at the half, Tennessee opened the second stanza with back-to-back three-pointers by Jackson and Moore to assume a commanding 42-17 advantage.

The Lady Vols will continue their rugged road trip vs. ranked teams next Saturday when they travel to Storrs, Conn., to take on two-time defending national champions UConn.
