Revenge of the D

Tennessee's defensive coaches offered an early precursor to Thursday's workout at Haslam Field. Their aim was fixing a glaring omission from the most recent spring practice session.

"It started at 8 o'clock this morning," head coach Lane Kiffin said. "The last practice not getting any turnovers, I think the defensive coaches took it personal and they came after some of the offensive coaches in the staff meeting. They told them how it was going to be today and they called it right, because they came out here and backed it up.

"The defensive coaches came out here with a lot of confidence today, and the players fed off it."

Tuesday's workout ended without a single turnover. Great for the offense, but not so much for the guys wearing orange these days. So the defense turned the tables and made life miserable for UT's quarterbacks.

"A really horrendous day by the quarterbacks with four interceptions," Kiffin said. "We've got to come out tomorrow and take care of the ball."

Friday's second full scrimmage of the spring campaign takes place at Neyland Stadium. Because of the quick turnaround, the Vols practiced Thursday in shorts and helmets for 2 1/2 hours.

"It might have had something to do with not having the pads on and getting too relaxed," Kiffin said. "They forgot about what they are here to do and that's protect the ball. There were times they were getting sacked and just threw it up; we don't do that here, so we're going to fix it.

"We have such high expectations and standards for them that it's very disappointing. We realize there are going to be setbacks at times and people are going to make some bad decisions. We've just got to get them out of it. Unfortunately, today, one guy made a mistake and the other guy made the same mistake five plays later. It's a learning experience."

After Friday's scrimmage, the Vols are off for the remainder of Easter Weekend. Tennessee practices Tuesday and Thursday of next week before wrapping up spring with the annual Dish Network Orange and White Game on April 18.
