Lane Kiffin's goal is simple, return the Volunteer Football Program to national prominence.
No matter how good a coach you are, if you don't have some of the nation's best athletes on your roster, you will go into battle short handed.
It appears that Tennessee knows how to recruit, and it starting to pay off.
One of Florida's top athletes Merril Noel made the trip to Knoxville this weekend to take in first hand all the excitement the new coaching staff is generating.
"It was an electric and exciting environment," Noel told InsideTennessee.com Sunday afternoon. "It was unbelievable. I was amazed by how many fans showed up for a spring game."
The Vols coaching staff also apparently made a great impression on the stand out defensive back.
"I got a chance to talk to both Coach (Lane and Monte) Kiffins, Coach (Ed) Orgeron and Coach (Eddie) Gran," Noel said. "They were really pumped up that I was in Knoxville, they told me how important I was to their recruiting class. They told me they wanted me to be a part of changing the program at Tennessee."
Noel joined current Tennessee signee and his cousin Nukeese Richardson on the trip to watch the Vols' Spring Game. He got a chance to see the campus and facilities. He got to witness something new that he didn't know anything about.
"I loved the Vol Walk," Noel said. "I liked that a lot, it was very impressive."
Does Noel have a current early favorite?
According to Noel he is being recruited by Tennessee harder than anyone at this point.
"The coaching staff is really recruiting me harder than anyone else at this point, it's impressive," Noel said. "I get hand written notes from every member of the coaching staff asking me about my family and my life, not just about football."
The Vols coaching staff isn't the only ones putting the pressure on the Florida athlete.
"Nukeese and I are very close," Noel said. "He is pushing hard for me to be a Volunteer."
The new attitude and change in Knoxville has impressed Noel.
"Tennessee definitely is on the rise as a program and for my services," Noel said. "I probably won't make a final decision until signing day."
