Gridder Wade shines in track debut

UT football player Jonathan Wade didn't waste any time making a mark on the Vol track program.

In his first collegiate meet, an all-comers event Thursday at Stokely Athletics Center, Wade registered a provisional NCAA qualifying time (6.26 seconds) in the 55-meter dash. Sean Lambert (6.38) and Jabari Greer (6.40) gave UT a 1-2-3 sweep of the event. Greer was a starting cornerback for the football team last fall.

UT's Stephen Harris won the pole vault for decathletes in 14-9, well ahead of teammate Alex Hriteu (12-10).

Tennessee also registered some noteworthy runnerup finishes. Karl Jennings ran a 7.43 clocking to place second behind former Vol Dawane Wallace (7.24) in the 55-meter hurdles. Rocky Danners went 16-8 3/4 to place second in the open pole vault behind former Vol Tim Mack (17-8). Like Wallace, Mack was competing unattached. UT's Kevin Thompson placed second in the shot put (46-10 1/4) and Vol teammate Jim Sexton finished second in the weight throw (47-3).
