Pearl's USA team wins

NETANYA, Israel — The Maccabi USA Open Men's Basketball Team, led by Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl, defeated Argentina 97-89 Monday to advance to the medal round at the 18th World Maccabiah Games.

"This was an incredibly physical basketball game," Pearl said. "I'm really proud of our guys for the way they played and the toughness they showed. There were multiple technical fouls, but we stayed poised.

"If we continue to maintain our focus, good things will keep happening for us."

Dan Grunfeld was Maccabi USA's top scorer Monday with 25 points, while Todd Golden added 22. Tennessee forward Steven Pearl led the U.S. squad with seven rebounds while also logging 10 points and seven assists in the winning effort.

The U.S. Maccabi Team plays Tuesday at 4 p.m. (9 a.m. ET) against the loser of Monday's game between Israel and Canada.
