Net Vols stumble in Peach State

The Tennessee team's participation in the SEC Coaches Men's Indoor Championships was brief and undistinguished.

Rawl Martin beat Georgia's Jason Varela 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the qualifying round to notch UT's only victory in the event, held at Norcross, Ga. Martin lost in the round of 64 to Ole Miss's Claes Lindholm 6-3, 6-4.

Three UT teammates made the main draw without qualifying but, like Martin, lost their round of 64 matches. Mark Dietrich lost to Georgia's Raian Luchici 4-6, 7-6, 6-3; Wade Orr was bested by LSU's Paul White 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 andVince Perna fell to LSU's Jason Hazley 6-1, 7-6.

Dietrich and Orr fared no better in doubles, losing to Vanderbilt's Scott Brown and Chad Harris by a 9-8 score.

Tennessee's next action will come on Jan. 25, when the 14th-ranked Vols open up their dual-match season with a double-header against Tennessee Tech and The Citadel at UT's Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center.
