The Tennessee Vols moved 69 yards in nine plays on the game's opening possession, taking a 7-0 lead when Montario Hardesty scored from 11 yards out. The lead lasted just 13 seconds as Ohio's Chris Garrett returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to tie the score at 7-all. The Bobcats' Noah Keller intercepted a deflected Jonathan Crompton pass and returned it to the Vol 30-yard line. Theo Scott hit LaVon Brazill with a two-yard touchdown pass four plays later to put Ohio up 14-7. A 22-yard punt return by Nu'keese Richardson gave UT the ball at OU's 30-yard, and Crompton capped a five-play drive with a two-yard TD toss to Brandon Warren that tied the score at 14-all on the final play of the period.
KEY PLAY

A big hit by Rico McCoy caused Garrett to fumble at the Ohio U 10-yard line late in the quarter. Vol freshman safety Janzen Jackson recovered but fumbled the ball right back to Ohio U at the Bobcat 8-yard line.

KEY PLAYER

Garrett. His return came at a time when UT had tremendous confidence and momentum. Both came to a screeching halt.

KEY STAT

Tennessee outgained Ohio 143-39 in yards and 8-1 in first downs, yet had to settle for a 14-14 tie.

Vol defensive end Chris Walker sniffed out a middle screen, stepped in front to intercept it at the Ohio 7-yard line and trotted into the end zone to put UT on top 21-14. Matthew Weller hit a 36-yard field goal for the Bobcats but Daniel Lincoln answered with a 38-yarder for UT on the final play of the half, giving the Vols a 24-17 intermission lead.
KEY PLAY

Walker's interception and TD return. That gave UT a lead it would never relinquish.

KEY PLAYER

Walker. In addition to his interception, he had a four-yard tackle for loss in the quarter.

KEY STAT

Theo Scott completed 10 of 18 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown in the quarter. Unfortunately for him, the recipient of the TD pass was Chris Walker.

UT's Daniel Lincoln had a 46-yard field goal try bounce off the left upright on Tennessee's first possession of the second half. Weller booted an 18-yarder moments later that narrowed the gap to 24-20 but 26-yard screen pass from Crompton to Bryce Brown gave UT a 31-20 lead moments later.
KEY PLAY

On third-and-eight at the Ohio 26-yard line, Tennessee anticipated a blitz and called the screen pass to Brown, who scored untouched to pad the lead to 31-20.

KEY PLAYER

Hardesty. The Vol tailback carried seven times for 69 yards in the quarter.

KEY STAT

Crompton completed just two of five passes in the period - both to backs - but they produced 49 yards and a touchdown.

Crompton fumbled on the second play of the quarter, and Keller returned it 46 yards for an apparent TD. The play was overruled, however, when the replay official ascertained that Keller had a foot out of bounds when he scooped up the loose ball. UT wound up retaining possession. Weller hit a 31-yard field goal with 10:38 remaining but Lincoln answered with a career-best 49-yarder at the 6:00 mark to widen the gap to 34-23.
KEY PLAY

The reversal of Crompton's fumble. An Ohio touchdown there would've cut UT's lead to 31-27 and might have changed the game's complexion.

KEY PLAYER

Lincoln. His 49-yard field goal gave UT a two-score lead and essentially put the game on ice.

KEY STAT

Tennessee called just three pass plays all quarter. Two fell incomplete. Crompton was sacked on the other.
