Memorial service for Mahelona

A Knoxville memorial service for Jesse Mahelona is scheduled for Sunday at Faith Promise Church beginning at 7 p.m.

Mahelona was killed in a Sept. 5 automobile accident in his native town of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. He was 26. Family, friends and fans attending the service are asked to bring a letter explaining the impact Jesse made on their lives. Those letters will be bound together and sent to Mahelona's family in Hawaii.

Mahelona played two seasons of football at Tennessee after transferring from Orange Cost College in California. He was named Sporting News All-America and All-SEC after the Volunteers' 2004 campaign. Mahelona had a brief NFL career that included stops with the Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons, Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jesse Mahelona Trust. All proceeds from the trust will be directed to Mahelona's wife, Brandee Kukita-Mahelona, who is pregnant with the couple's second child, and his 19-month-old daughter, Karter.
