Buzz aims high: national title

Give Buzz Peterson credit: He isn't afraid to set lofty goals.

Speaking at his Tuesday news conference, Tennessee's head basketball coach brushed off the idea that UT is a football school that will never compete at the elite level in basketball. In fact, he said his ultimate goal is to compete for a national championship.

''At Tennessee, in the SEC, I see no reason why you can't win a national championship, be in a Final Four or something, with all the resources,'' he said. ''But it takes time to get your program going and it's difficult to have a lot of luck.

''Being at Tennessee is no reason not to do that.''

Jerry Green's 2000-2001 Vols got off to a 16-1 start and earned a No. 4 national ranking. The Vols fell apart shortly thereafter, losing 10 of their remaining 16 games to finish 22-11 and out of the top 25.
