The Tennessee Vols went 60 yards in seven plays on their opening possession to grab a 7-0 lead on Vanderbilt. Montario Hardesty carried on five of the seven plays and got the TD on a six-yard burst. The Vols went up 10-0 moments later as walk-on Devin Mathis booted a 25-yard field goal. Vanderbilt's Ryan Fowler answered with a 31-yard field goal, trimming the UT lead to 10-3.
KEY PLAY

Fullback Kevin Cooper made a dandy catch of a Jonathan Crompton pass for a 21-yard gain to the Vandy 6-yard line on UT's opening possession. UT scored on the very next play.

KEY PLAYER

Crompton. The Vol quarterback connected on 7 of 11 pass attempts for 88 yards in the quarter.

KEY STAT

Tennessee piled up 157 yards of total offense in the quarter.

Tennessee faked a punt on fourth-and-2 at the Vandy 45-yard line but Cooper's six-yard gain was nullified by a holding penalty. The Vols punted the ball away, and the Dores promptly drove 92 yards in 11 plays to pull even at 10-all. A two-yard toss from Mackenzi Adams to Ryan van Rensburg produced the score. Tennessee reponded with an 11-play, 72-yard march capped when Crompton hit Denarius Moore from 11 yards out for a 17-10 lead. Vandy's Bobby Johnson elected to go for it on fourth-and-3 at the Vol 39-yard line just before halftime. The pass fell incomplete, however, and Tennessee zipped 61 yards in four plays to score with 5 seconds left in the half. Crompton hit tight end Luke Stocker from 16 yards out to bump the score to 24-10.
KEY PLAY

The first play of UT's final TD drive was an 11-yard pass to Quintin Hancock, with 15 yards tacked on for a roughing-the-passer penalty on Vandy's Greg Billinger. That 26-yard advance put the Vols in scoring range.

KEY PLAYER

Adams. Just when UT appeared on the verge of blowing the game open, the Vandy quarterback got his team back in the game by clicking on 6 of 9 passes for 69 yards and a TD in the period.

KEY STAT

Tennessee outgained Vandy 285-155 in total yards during the first half.

Crompton extended his string of conecutive passes without an interception to 142 (one shy of Casey Clausen's school record) only to have a pass over the middle bounce off the hands of freshman David Oku and into the hands of Vandy's Jamie Graham. Vanderbilt converted the break into a 27-yard Fowler field goal that trimmed the deficit to 24-13.
KEY PLAY

Tackle Chris Scott was flagged for a late hit that cost UT 15 yards and a possible score late in the period. A three-yard Hardesty run should've had the Vols facing third-and-two at the Vandy 40-yard line but the penalty on Scott left them facing a third-and-17 at their own 45.

KEY PLAYER

The two defenses. They dominated the quarter.

KEY STAT

After piling up 285 yards in the first two quarters, UT managed just 47 in the third.

Vandy drove to a third-and-goal at the Vol 5-yard line but Wes Brown sacked Adams, who also was flagged for intentional grounding. The Commodores had to settle for a 32-yard Fowler field goal that narrowed the gap to 24-16 with 2:54 remaining. Tennessee fielded Vandy's onsides kick, picked up one first down, then turned the ball over on downs at the Commodore 25-yard line with 26 seconds left. Brown then intercepted a desperation third-down pass by Adams and rambled 25 yards to paydirt with three seconds left to seal a 31-16 victory.
KEY PLAY

Brown's sack, coupled with the intentional-grounding call against Adams, forced Vandy to settle for a field goal that left UT leading by eight. A touchdown there might've dramatically changed the complexion of the game.

KEY PLAYER

Wes Brown. Who else could it be?

KEY STAT

Tennessee, the SEC's least-penalized team, was flagged nine times for 95 yards ... both season highs.
