UCLA nips Lady Vol netters

The 11th-ranked Lady Vol tennis team suffered its first loss of the season at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis., falling by a 4-3 score to No. 9 UCLA. Both teams now stand 4-1.

UCLA won the doubles point, then Bruin freshman Susi Wild dumped UT sophomore Breanna Kray at the No. 4 slot, 6-0, 6-1, to provide a 2-0 lead.

The Bruins went up 3-0 when 84th-rated rookie Jackie Carleton posted a 6-0, 6-2, victory over Lady Vol junior Tammy Encina at No. 2.

Anya Loncaric sealed the win for the Bruins at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 thriller over Ashley Robards.

With the outcome already settled, UT swept the three remaining matches. Melissa Schaub trounced Sarah Gregg, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. Fourth-ranked Vilmarie Castellvi outlasted UCLA's sixth-ranked Sara Walker 7-5, 5-7 (10-8) at No. 1. Crystal Cleveland held off Laura Gordon, 6-7(0), 6-3, (10-7) at No. 5 to secure the final score.

Castellvi remains unbeaten this spring. She is 9-0 in singles competition and 8-0 in doubles. Her combined 2002-03 records are 20-3 (singles) and 12-1 (doubles).
