The second pass thrown by Tennessee's Jonathan Crompton was picked off and returned 56 yards for a touchdown by Kentucky linebacker Sam Maxwell to produce a 7-0 UK lead. The Vols answered in just three plays, however, as Montario Hardesty scored from nine yards out to cap a 60-yard drive. UK went up 14-7 with seven seconds left in the period, however, when Randall Cobb raced 17 yards on an end-around.
KEY PLAY

Crompton completed a 30-yard pass to Gerald Jones on the first scrimmage play after Maxwell's pick-six. That quieted the UK crowd and showed that the Vols were not rattled. Sure enough, they scored the tying TD two plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Cobb. He carried 7 times for 48 yards and a touchdown in the quarter and caught three passes for another 15 yards.

KEY STAT

Kentucky had just four first downs in the quarter but still mustered two touchdowns.

Kentucky appeared ready to expand its lead, driving to the Vol 35-yard line. Wes Brown caused UK quarterback Morgan Newton to fumble, however, and Vol teammate Willie Bohannon recovered at the Vol 34. Tennessee then launched a game-tying 66-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 13-yard Hardesty run. UK retaliated, however, and went up 21-14 on a one-yard run by Derrick Locke with 39 seconds left to intermission.
KEY PLAY

Two screen passes to Locke on UK's third TD drive. The first picked up 12 yards on third-and-nine at the UK 37. The second picked up 16 yards on third-and-six at the Vol 23.

KEY PLAYER

Crompton. He kept Tennessee in the game by connecting on 4 of 8 passes for 70 yards and making a 12-yard scramble in the quarter.

KEY STAT

Cobb accounted for 171 yards in the half - 55 rushing, 24 receiving, 31 passing yards and 61 on kickoff returns.

Tennessee pulled even at 21-21 on a seven-play, 62-yard drive that featured two 10-yard runs by Hardesty and a 16-yard TD strike to Luke Stocker. Cobb fumbled on the first play of UK's ensuing possession after a good hit by Rico McCoy, and UT's LaMarcus Thompson recovered at the Wildcat 28-yard line. Devin Mathis booted a 30-yard field goal seven plays later to give UT its first lead of the game at 24-21.
KEY PLAY

Due to a 15-yard chop-block penalty, Tennessee faced a third-and-18 at its 30-yard line. Stocker turned a short pass from Crompton into a 30-yard gain and a crucial first down. UT scored the tying TD four plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Stocker. Four plays after making the clutch third-down catch for 30 yards, he scored the tying touchdown on a 16-yard reception.

KEY STAT

After running wild in the first two quarters, Cobb had just one carry for 5 yards in the third quarter and fumbled at the end of it. UT also shut down Newton, who completed just 1 of 4 passes for 3 yards.

It appeared Tennessee's 24-21 lead would stand up when UK had to punt the ball back to the Vols with 3:12 left. Stocker fumbled after a big hit by Wildcat defensive back Ashton Cobb, however, and UK's Taylor Wyndham recovered at the UT 37-yard line. Lones Seiber nailed a game-tying 23-yard field goal with 33 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Eric Berry dumped Locke for a six-yard loss on the second play of UK's overtime possession and Seiber missed a 49-yard field goal try two plays later. UT was called for holding on the first play of its OT possession but Crompton hit Gerald Jones for 14 yards on second-and-19 to the Kentucky 20-yard line. On third-and-five Hardesty burst through a gaping hole at left guard and scored untouched to win the game.
KEY PLAY

The 14-yard completion to Jones in OT. It put the Vols back in field-goal range and freed them to hand the ball to Hardesty rather than throw it on third down.

KEY PLAYER

Hardesty. Despite rushing 27 times in the first three quarters, he carried 10 times for 33 yards in the fourth quarter and twice for 21 in overtime.

KEY STAT

The only one that matters: Tennessee 25 wins, Kentucky 0 over the past quarter-century.
