That question: What's your favorite book, movie and non-football activity?
Being an avid reader, he couldn't single out a favorite book ... or even a favorite author. His choice of writers and subject matter proved quite interesting, however.
"I enjoy a lot of books," Dooley said. "I'm immersing myself in Tennessee books right now, trying to learn and study. I go through strings of authors that I like. I have a tendency that, if I read a good book, then I'll buy another book by the same author.
"I've been in the Pat Conroy thing. I went through the Michael Crichton thing years ago. Of course, I've been through the John Grisham thing, being a lawyer. And I enjoy some of the classics. I don't know where to begin on a book because there's so many good ones out there. One of the books I absolutely loved as a youngster was Lonesome Dove. There's your cowboy/western book.
"I also like a lot of reference, historical-type books. I went through a whole World War II series where I read all of Stephen Ambrose's books. I guess that's my nature; I get onto something and stick with it."
Conroy, a graduate of The Citadel, wrote such military-themed works as The Great Santini and The Lords of Discipline. Crichton is known for technological thrillers such as The Andromeda Strain, Jurassic Park and Sphere. Grisham wrote best-selling courtroom dramas such as The Firm, The Client, The Rainmaker and The Runaway Jury. Ambrose authored numerous books with historical and/or military themes.
The military theme turned up again when Dooley discussed his favorite movies. Again, he couldn't settle on a single title.
"I love movies, and there are so many different genres out there," he said. "I really enjoy the 'Saving Private Ryan' type of movies. I like the inspirational/historical movies that have some truth to them but I can enjoy a silly comedy as much as anybody, too."
As for his favorite non-football activity, that question proved easiest to answer.
"Outside of football, I try to play with my kids or I try to play a little golf," he said. "I haven't played since last July but I really enjoy it."
