Summer show-offs

Operating on the premise that "Any shot is a good shot in summer-league ball," several Tennessee basketball players fired at will in Tuesday night's Rocky Top League action at Knoxville's Bearden High gym.

Renaldo Woolridge, a matchup nightmare due to his combination of height (6-10) and quickness, scored 39 points in a losing cause as Richardson Construction fell 115-104 to DeRoyal. Former Vol C.J. Watson, now with the NBA's Golden State Warriors, chipped in 17 points for Richardson.

Big Orange signee Jordan McRae scored 27 points to pace DeRoyal. Brian Williams, UT's 6-10 senior center, added 25 points. Melvin Goins, the Vols' 5-10 senior point guard, contributed 17 points.

Tennessee guard Scotty Hopson, who feasted on Rocky Top opponents the past two summers, is at it again. The 6-7 junior hit 10 of 25 field-goal tries and 9 of 13 foul shots en route to 31 points in leading The News-Sentinel past Ray's ESG 118-110. Former Bearden High star Michael Blue contributed 27 points and former Vol Dane Bradshaw chipped in 8. Former Vol Wayne Chism missed the game because of stitches above his right eye stemming from a stray elbow at a recent NBA workout.

Former East Tennessee State standout Courtney Pigram led Ray's with 24 points. Vol senior Steven Pearl added 16. UT signee Trae Golden scored 13 and former Tennessee All-American Chris Lofton chipped in 11. Vol senior Josh Bone contributed 7 points.

The final game of opening-night play saw First Tennessee tap Choice Spine 112-84. Bearden High senior Ty Greene led the winners with 22 points. DeMario Curry chipped in 20 and Tennessee sophomore Kenny Hall contributed 18.

Ricky Taylor led Choice Spine scorers with 15 points. Vol junior Cameron Tatum added 13. Former Vol Tyler Smith did not show but is expected to participate when Rocky Top Summer League action resumes Thursday night.
