Lady Vol soccer team opens tonight

The Tennessee Lady Vol soccer team will officially kick off its 2010 regular season slate on Friday night at 7 p.m. ET at the Regal Soccer Stadium by playing host to the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers.

The Orange & White enter the match-up 9-5 all-time in season openers with victories in five of their last seven lid lifters. Last year, UT got a pair of goals from senior midfielder/forward Mick Imgram in downing ETSU, 2-0, and christening the 2009 campaign with a win.

Last Saturday, Tennessee ventured to "The Bluegrass State" for a preseason exhibition contest against Louisville at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Ky. Goals by midfielders Julie Edwards (senior) and Caroline Brown (freshman) boosted the Big Orange to a two-score advantage early in the second half en route to an eventual 2-1 Lady Vol triumph.

UT out-shot the Cardinals, 10-9, while senior goalkeeper Molly Baird made three saves to garner the win. Junior midfielder Chelsea Hatcher and Edwards led Tennessee with three shots each, while senior forward Anna Fisher, junior midfielder Emily Shore, Edwards and Brown were responsible for Tennessee's four total shots on goal.

Rookie midfielder Sanna Saarinen was credited with an assist on Brown's goal that granted the Orange & White its two-score advantage.

Western Kentucky enters Friday night's match coming off a 2009 campaign that saw it post a 14-4-2 record and set a school record for league wins with nine in Sun Belt action. The Lady Toppers return five starters from that squad including 2010 Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selections Mallory Outerbridge and Libby Stout.

Last weekend during exhibition action, WKU tied three-time defending Conference USA champ Memphis, 1-1, and downed Butler, 1-0.
