Texas A&M shook off a slow start and survived five first-half fumbles to cruise to a 48-16 win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday night to pick up their second win of the year. Jerrod Johnson threw for 349 yards and 4 TDs, Jeff Fuller caught 10 passes for 160 yards, and Christine Michael had his second straight 100-yard rushing game to lead the Aggies.
La Tech received the opening kickoff and on their second play from scrimmage a Colby Cameron pass was intercepted by Texas A&M linebacker Michael Hodges at the La Tech 24-yard line. The Aggies failed to pick up a a first down and on 4th-and-three elected to kick a field goal. Randy Bullock missed his 35-yard field goal attempt.
After forcing a La Tech punt, Jerrod Johnson connected with Jeff Fuller on a 56-yard completion to the La Tech 8-yard line. However, on the next play Christine Michael fumble and La Tech recovered at their 9-yard line.
The Aggie defense forced another La Tech punt, but Dustin Harris muffed the punt catch and La Tech recovered at the Aggie 42-yard line. La Tech drove to the Aggie 10-yard line but on a 3rd-and-7 a Colby Cameron pass was intercepted by Texas A&M cornerback Coryell Judie in the endzone for a touchback.
The Aggies went 3-and-out and punted to La Tech. La Tech drove from their 42-yard line to the Aggie 20-yard line before being forced to settle for a field goal attempt. Matt Nelson's 37-yard field goal attempt was good to give La Tech a 3-0 lead with 2:58 left in the first quarter.
Cyrus Gray returned the ensuing kickoff to midfield. Jerrod Johnson connected with true freshman tight end Nehemiah Hicks on a 28-yard completion over the middle to the La Tech 27-yard line. After a 15-yard Jerrod Johnson scramble and a 5-yard completion to Jeff Fuller, Cyrus Gray scored on a 3-yard run. Randy Bullock's extra point gave the Aggies a 7-3 lead with 42 seconds left in the first quarter.
After another La Tech punt, the Aggies drove 78 yards in 9 plays, with Jerrod Johnson tossing a 10-yard TD pass to Ryan Tannehill/ Bullock's extra point gave the Aggies a 14-3 lead at the 10:34 mark in the second quarter.
Midway through second quarter, a La Tech punt was fumbled by Aggie return man Terrence Frederick and La Tech recovered at the Aggie 1-yard line. Three rushing attempts resulting in no gain. On 4th-and-goal quarterback Tarik Hakmi snuck over for a touchdown. Matt Nelson's extra point cut the Aggie lead to 14-10 with 4:
Ryan Swope returned the kickoff over the thirty-yard line but fumbled and La Tech recovered at the Aggie 36-yard line. After picking up a first down, La Tech running back Lennon Creer rushed inside the Aggie ten-yard line but Aggie linebacker Damontre Moore forced a fumble and safety Steven Terrell recovered at the 7-yard line.
The Aggies were unable to move the ball and had to punt from their end zone. La Tech drove to the Aggie 16-yard line before Aggie linebacker Damontre Moore sacked La Tech quarterback Colby Cameron, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Aggie defensive lineman Lucas Patterson at the 24-yard line with 18 seconds left in the first half.
Jerrod Johnson scrambled for a 17-yard gain. On the next play La Tech was called for a late hit personal foul as time expired on the first half clock. The defensive penalty gave the Aggies an untimed free play at the La Tech 44-yard line. Jerrod Johnson heaved a Hail Mary pass which was caught by Uzoma Nwachukwu at the 5-yard line and he took it into the endzone for an Aggie touchdown. Bullock's extra point gave the Aggies a 21-10 halftime lead.
The Aggies were fortunate to take a lead into halftime after fumbling the ball five times and losing four of those funbles. Special teams continued to be an Aggie nemisis with three of the fumbles coming on punt returns, one on a kickoff return, to go with a missed field goal.
At the half, Texas A&M led La Tech in total yards, 272 to 146, and in first downs, 13 to 11. Jerrod Johnson had completed 13 of 19 passes for 213 yards and 2 TDs and had rushed for 26 yards on 4 carries.
The Aggies received the opening kickoff of the second half. On their second play from scrimmage, Christine Michael rushed 67 yards to the La Tech 9-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-goal from the 4-yard line, Jerrod Johnson found a leaping Jeff Fuller for a touchdown. Bullock's extra point gave the Aggies a 28-10 lead less than two minutes into the second half.
Fuller's TD catch tied him for most Aggie career TD receptions with 19.
La Tech drove to the Aggie 40-yard line before on 4th-and-4 quarterback Colby Cameron was sacked by Aggie linebacker Michael Hodges for a 6-yard loss, resulting in a turnover on downs.
Texas A&M drove to the 23-yard line before the drive stalled and the Aggies were forced to settle for a 40-yard Randy Bullock field goal to extend their lead to 31-10 with 8:19 to go in the third quarter.
La Tech quickly drove 74 yards in 5 plays, with Tarik Hakmi throwing a 36-yard pass to Taulib Ikharo and connecting with Eric Harper for a 35-yard touchdown. Nelsom missed the extra point to leave the score Texas A&M 31, La Tech 16.
The Aggies drove to the La Tech 38-yard line before being forced to punt. Jared Jaroszewski's 40-yard punt was downed by the Aggies as the 1-yard line. On 3rd-and-6 Damontre Moore sacked Tarik Hakmi forcing a fumble that was recovered by La Tech. La Tech's punt was caught by Aggie return man Dustin Harris and Harris took the punt back 54 yards for a tounchdown. Bullock's extra point opened up a 38-16 lead for the Aggies.
La Tech returned the kickoff to the Aggie 46-yard line. With La Tech going for it on 4th-and-2 from the 38-yard line, the Aggie defense smother La Tech for a 8-yard loss, forcing another turnover on downs.
The Aggies used 8 plays to go 54 yards, with Jerrod Johnson tossing a 1-yard touchdown to Uzoma Nwachukwu. Bullock's extra point gave the Aggies a comfortable 45-16 lead early in the fourth quarter.
After another La Tech punt, the Aggies drove from their 8-yard line to the La Tech 5-yard line before Randy Bullock kicked a 22-yard field goal to give A&M a 48-16 lead with 5:44 left in the game.
After another La Tech punt, the Aggies ran out the clock to pick up their second win of the season.
For the game, Texas A&M led La Tech in total yards, 566 to 269, and in first downs, 27 to 17.
