No 11 Hogs hang on for 24-17 win over Aggies

Ryan Mallett completed 27 of 38 passers for 310 yards and 3 TDs to lead No. 7 Arkansas to 24-17 win over Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington. Arkansas opened up a 21-7 lead in the 2nd quarter before the Aggies came back to pull to within four, 21-17 midway through the 3rd quarter. The Hogs scored a field goal off an Ag fumble and then survived a last-minute Aggie drive.

Ryan Mallett completed 27 of 38 passers for 310 yards and 3 TDs to lead No. 11 Arkansas to 24-17 win over Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington.

Arkansas opened up a 21-7 lead late in the second quarter before the Aggies came back to pull to within four, 21-17 midway through the third quarter. Arkansas took advantage of an Aggie fumble to score a field goal and then hang on for the 24-17 win, surviving a final minute A&M drive and pass attempt into the endzone on the last play of the game.

Arkansas took the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards in 8 plays, with Ryan Mallettt tossing an 8-yard touchdown pass to Joe Adams. The extra poiunt by Zach Hocker game Arkansas a 7-0 lead after a little over four minutes of play.

Texas A&M drove to the Arkansas 37-yard line on their first possession before having to punt, and the punt sailed into the endzoe for a touchback.

On Arkansas' first play from scrimmage on their second possession, a Ryan Mallett pass attempt was intercepted by Aggie defensive back Terrence Frederick at the Arkansas 36-yard line and Frederick return the ball to the Hog 2-yard line.

Two pass incompletions and a 1-yard gain left the Aggies facing 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line. The Aggies elected to go for it and Christine Michael dove over from the one for an Aggie touchdown. Randy Bullock's extra point tied the game at 7 with 5:27 left in the first quarter.

Arkansas quickly responded when receiver Cobi Hamilton got behind the Aggie defense and Ryan Mallett connected with him for 71 yards touchdown pass. Hocker's extra point gve the Hogs a 14-7 lead at the 4:04 mark in the first quarter.

After two punts each by Texas A&M and Arkansas, with eight minutes left in the first half Jerrod Johnson completed a pass Jeff Fuller for a 10-yard gain before Hog Greg Gatson forced Fuller to fumble and Elton Ford recovered at the A&M 37-yard line. The Aggie defense held and Arkansas kicker Zach Hocker missed a 49-yard field goal attempt.

The Aggies fumbled their next possession and Arkansas recovered at the Aggie 21-yard line. Arkansas returned the favor when Austin Tucker fumbled and Terrence Frederick recovered at the A&M 26-yard line.

The Aggies went 3-and-out and a short punt gave Arkansas good field position at their 43-yard line. It took Arkansas 5 plays to drive 57 yards, with Ryan Mallett tossing a 6-yard TD pass to Ben Cleveland. Hocker's extra point extended the Hogs' lead to 21-7 with just 53 seconds left in the first half.

A 36-yard Cyrus Gray kickoff return and a pass interference penalty moved the ball into Arkansas territory. The Aggies moved to the Arkansas 31-yard line before calling a timeout with 14 seconds left in the half. Jerrod Johnson connected with Jeff Fuller for a touchdown and Bullock's extra point cut the Arkansas lead to 21-14 at halftime.

After an exchange of punts to start the second half, the Aggies set up from their 10-yard line. Jerrod Johnson found a streaking Jeff Fuller for a 69-yard pass completion to the Arkansas 22-yard line. Unable to move from there, Randy Bullock kicked a 38-yard field goal to cut the Hog lead to 21-17 with eight minutes to go in the third quarter.

The Aggie defense forced Arkansas to punt after a 3-and-out but the Aggies turned the ball back over to the Hogs when a Christine Michael fumbled was recovered by Arkansas at the A&M 30-yard line. The Aggie defense limited the damage by forcing Arkansas to settle for a 39-yard Zach Hocker field goal that restored a 7-point Arkansas lead, 24-17, at the 5:04 mark in the third quarter.

The rest of the game was one of field position as Texas A&M and Arkansas exchanged a series of punts, but with the Aggies having to start every drive insider their 20.

The Aggies had one final attempt, setting up from their 20-yard line with 1:08 left in the game. Two Aggie first downs and a pass interference penalty gave the Aggies the ball at the Arkansas 39-yard line with 6 seconds to play. Jerrod Johnson threw a 'Hail Mary' pass into the endzone, but Arkansas defensive back Tramain Thomas mad an interception to end the game with Arkansas hanging on for a 24-17 win over Texas A&M.

In addition to edging out the Aggies om the scoreboard, Arkansas also edged out the Aggies in the stats, with Arkansas leading in fiorst downs, 18 to 17, and in total yards, 442 to 324.

For Arkansas, Ryan Mallett completed 27 of 38 passers for 310 yards and 3 TDs with 1 interception.

For Texas A&M, Jerrod Johnson completed just 15 of his 40 pass attempts for 212 yards and 1 TD with the one last-lay interception. Jeff Fuller has another big game catching 8 passes for 154 yards and 1 TD. Christine Michael rushed for 79 yards and 1 TD on 18 carries.

Texas A&M suffered three lost fumbles, but a stiff Aggie defense limited the damage of these turnovers.

Texas A&M now returnes to Big 12 play, hosting an undefeated Missouri next Saturday
