The Texas A&M coaching staff remained busy on the 2012 recruiting trail, nabbing its sixth commitment from last weekend's junior day. Late Tuesday evening, Abbeville (LA) DE/TE Alonzo Williams called his area recruiting coach, Jim Turner, to verbally pledge to the Aggies.
"I just called Coach Turner about 15-20 minutes ago to commit," Williams said. "I haven't even talked to Coach Sherman yet."
Williams is the first Abbeville prospect taken by the Aggies since 1993, when defensive lineman Brandon Mitchell signed with R.C. Slocum. Mitchell went on to be a dominant force along the line for the Wrecking Crew defense and he later played eight seasons in the NFL.
The 6-foot-3, 242-pound prospect is being recruited by Texas A&M as a dual athlete who could play either tight end or defensive end. While Williams is most experienced on the defensive side of the ball, he's open to the idea of playing some tight end.
"I'll play where the coaches think I contribute the most," Williams said. "My greatest asset is my long arms and my strength. It makes it easy for me to shed blocks on defense. For tight end, I can catch anything thrown my way and block well."
Williams had visited Texas A&M several times in the past year, and those trips allowed him to better understand what the university and the football program have to offer.
"I was very surprised with Texas A&M. It's not what I imagined," Williams said. "I was like ‘oh my God', this is a great place with top notch facilities, a great atmosphere, and good academics."
The Texas A&M coaching staff was out in-front of Williams' recruitment and head coach Mike Sherman was the first to offer the Abbeville product. The word was just getting out on the promising athlete when he decided to end the process.
"Just this week, I received letters from Notre Dame and Tulane. My coach said I was going to get more interest from schools," Williams said. "But Texas A&M appreciated me from day one. They said they liked my effort and the attitude I play with on the field. They were also impressed with my persistence of coming to visit them four times. It's a good fit for everybody."
