Ags Get Their Man

Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne announced late Sunday that former Murray State head coach Billy Kennedy has accepted the Texas A&M basketball job vacated last week by Mark Turgeon. Aggie Websider's David Sandhop interviewed 2011 signee Jordan Green for his reaction to the hire.

Billy Kennedy, the former head coach at Murray State University, has been named the new men's basketball coach at Texas A&M University, Director of Athletics Bill Byrne announced late Sunday.

"I am very excited to announce that we have hired Billy Kennedy as our new men's basketball head coach," Byrne said. "I think he is the perfect fit for Texas A&M. In talking to several people who I respect in college basketball, they mentioned Billy as an outstanding basketball coach but an even better person. He is a winner and his players play hard for him and they play an aggressive style of defense. He has proven he can recruit nationwide, but I look for him to make more inroads here in the state of Texas."

Kennedy, 47, is the two-time Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year and has led the Murray State basketball program for the past five seasons which included a 31-5 record in 2008-09 as the Racers won the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title, the OVC Tournament Championship and upset Vanderbilt in the first round of the NCAA Championships before dropping a two-point decision to eventual national runner-up Butler. His coaching stops have included Southeastern Louisiana, New Orleans, Wyoming, Northwestern State, Tulane, Texas A&M, Creighton, California, Centenary, Miami and Murray State.

"I can't wait to get back to Aggieland," Kennedy said. "Even though I was there for only a short time, I could tell Aggieland is a special place. I look forward to meeting the team and working toward a seventh NCAA bid as well as even deeper tournament runs."

Shortly after the announcement, several experts weighed in on the decision to hire Kennedy.

ESPN analyst Pat Forde had this to say via his twitter account on Sunday, "Quick thought on Billy Kennedy to TAMU: won't win the press conference tomorrow, but will win plenty thereafter."

Aggie Websider's David Sandhop caught up with 2011 signee Jordan Green to discuss the hiring of new coach Billy Kennedy.

"He's a winner and a stand-up guy," Green said. "His faith is important to him, which is something very important to me. I'll be coming down with Jamal (Branch) to the press conference to meet him. I'm looking forward to it."

The Aggie men's basketball program has advanced to the NCAA Tournament a record six consecutive years, one of only 12 schools in the country to accomplish that feat.

Kennedy will be announced at a Monday, May 16 news conference in the Lohman Lobby inside the Cox-McFerrin Basketball Center which will begin at 3 p.m.
