Devall Ready For Senior Season

Earlier in the summer, it appeared Bastrop(LA) defensive standout Denzel Devall was on the verge of making a commitment. But with his high school season kicking off on Friday, his tune may have changed. Aggie Websider's David Sandhop has the latest.

Four-star defensive standout Denzel Devall says he's putting the recruiting process on the backburner as his senior season is set to officially kick-off this Friday. The 6-foot-2, 245-pound athlete now has another reason to focus on the football field. He's working at a new position.

"On Monday, the coaches moved me to middle linebacker," Devall said. "I like it because I'm a smart player and I like making the play calls. I like being in control."

Regardless of where he lines up on the field, Devall makes plays. Last weekend in the jamboree exhibition game, he blocked the safety back into the punter and caused a fumble that he picked up the ball and returned it for a touchdown. He had eight tackles and a forced fumble as well.

There's not much new on the recruiting front. Devall said he's not thinking about the recruiting process at the moment. He's focused on the season and leading his Bastrop HS teammates through the 2011 season and eventually to the state championship.

"I'm focused on the season and getting our team to the promised land, and I'm their Moses," Devall joked. "We will have a pretty good team this year and I've put my recruiting decision out of my mind until the end of the season."

But the highly-recruited defensive standout did say he plans to take in some college football games during the season. He recently communicated with Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman and the Aggies would like Devall to attend the OSU game on September 24 that will be heavily attended by other recruiting targets and commits.

"I'm definitely putting that game on my calendar. All of the guys I met this summer will be there and I want to hang out," Devall said. "But I really can't wait to see Kyle Field rumble at night. It will be a crazy."

Devall also said he is trying to schedule a trip to an Alabama game. The Crimson Tide has been recruiting the Bastrop native hard since a campus visit last month. Since that time, Devall has previously stated that his recruitment is a two-horse race between Alabama and Texas A&M.

"Yeah, I guess you could say that. Those two have been at the top of my list for a while," Devall said. "But I'm just going to play ball and I'll see where things stand when I get back into it after the season. I may look at some others. I don't know."

But for now, it's all about his senior season and what happens on the field. Recruiting will have to wait.
