What's up in July and August

With the start of the 2003 football season set to commence in just over a month, July and August in Aggieland guarantee to be crammed with activity. In his inaugural season as Texas A&M's head football coach, Dennis Franchione has maintained a marathon pace throughout most of the spring and summer.

Events on his busy lineup have ranged from throwing out the first pitch at a Texas Rangers baseball game to conducting Texas A&M's Coaches Clinic this week. Coach Fran is currently halfway through his statewide tour of A&M Clubs (he'll wrap things up with an appearance on Thursday, July 24th at the Brazos County A&M Club and on Monday, July 28th with the Fort Worth Aggies) and is now back home in College Station where he'll end the the final camp of the summer this weekend.

Monday thru Wednesday, July 21-23 marks the final 3 days of the planning retreat for the football staff. According to Coach Franchione, the retreat allows the staff to evaluate and discuss specifics for fall camp and to review scouting reports on A&M's first four opponents. Aggies everywhere were heartened to hear that Coach Fran concludes each day of the retreat by having two or three coaches report to the staff on various Aggie traditions.

In addition to the coaches making their preparations for the season, Texas Aggie football players are actively engaged in voluntary summer workouts throughout the month of July before reporting to camp on Tuesday, August 5th. Practice officially begins the following day (Wednesday, August 6th). Friday, August 15th will be an eventful, long-anticipated day behind the scenes for the team as they move into their new football locker room in Kyle Field's Football Complex & Academic Center.
